Are these a protein (strengthener) or a moisturizer or both. I've used coconut milk before and like the way it makes my hair feel, nice and soft, but I don't need too much protein.

If it streghtens, can you still use your regular protein products or will this suffice (take the place of protein treatments)?

Please advise. Thanks ladies!

I'm interested too...made curry for dinner and have some leftover coconut milk. Trying to see if I can use it somehow!

I think coconut is not so much protein, but that it prevents protein loss. Like sodium derivatives can strip protein, I think coconut does the opposite in protecting the hair.

The average amount of protein in a can of coconut milk is 3-5 grams, which isn't that much. Since it's high in saturated fat it's more moisturizing than anything. I personally use it as a moisturizing deep conditioning treatment every other month or so.

I could be wrong but I believe coconut and all it's variations only moisturize because it is one of the few oils that penetrates all the way through to the hair shaft. It may strengthen slightly in milk form but I don't think it's anything that could substitute a protein treatment.

I've used coconut in conjunction with aphogee and noticed no negative effects, my hair felt soft, strong, and I got a kick out of being a mini-mixologist (I know, I'm sad, lol) for a little while.

I think you should be good OP

There was a thread a while back about people using Coconut Milk and Yogurt to temporarily loosen/soften their texture. I think it's the lactic acid in it that makes the difference.

I also think it might be a light protein.

I find that yogurt is very moisturizing. I use it for my henna mixes and never have a drying experience. I think coconut is moisturizing as well, but not as great as yogurt when i tried it in a henna mix.

I just tried using coconut milk for deep conditioning yesterday and it was really great for moisturizing my hair. I don't think it has a lot of protein in it so I would mix it with a product that has more protein.
