Who uses cocoa powder in their natural hair? And how do people use it? Can you use it like bentonite clay?

I do! :-)

I absolutely love it for my DIY creations! I've never used it solo. It is always mixed with other stuff.
I use it 3 main ways:

*Hair/Body butter (this is usually Shea butter based and has all sorts of yummy variations, one of which has cocoa butter and cocoa powder with some vanilla/coffee extract thrown in for good measure)

*Deep Conditioner (often yogurt based but sometimes a mixture of nearly empties and cocoa powder thrown in with a bunch of other goodies)

*Dry Shampoo (cocoa mixed with cornstarch at about 50/50 or less, depending on my mood. Absolutely WONDERFUL for extending straight styles or styles water would otherwise ruin)

Cocoa is full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidents and I've noticed a very positive change in my hair since I added it to my regimen.

***Bonus: you get to smell like chocolate all day.***

HTHs! :-)

^^^ Those mixes sound great!

I want to try making my own version of Anita Grant's conditioner, which calls for cocoa powder. After reading the above, I can't wait to try!

This thread has me thinking of throwing some hot chocolate into my pre-poo mix this weekend. I should probably check what else is in it first.

I saw these two recipes yesterday and I am def. going to try the second one.
One of my fav. dc's(cacoa bark) has cocoa powder but it's too expensive.

1. Clarifying Chocolate Clay Hair Mask

1/2 cup bentonite clay
1/3 cup cocoa powder
1/4 cup coconut oil
1/4 cup aloe vera juice
2 tbsp raw or organic honey
3-5 drops tea tree or peppermint oil
1 cup (or more as needed) semi-boiling water

Combine all ingredients and whisk until smooth, allow to cool. Apply to slightly damp hair with a dye brush if available. Allow to dry for at least an hour. Rinse and apply your favorite conditioner. This mask will help clarify the hair and reduce frizz.

2. Chocolate Hair Smoothie

1 cup greek yogurt of choice
1/4 cup raw cocoa powder
3 tbsp coconut oil
3 drops lavender oil
5 drops rose hips seed oil
optional: 1/4 cup conditioner of choice

Mix all ingredients together and apply to freshly washed hair. Apply conditioning cap and allow to sit on hair for 30-45 minutes before rinsing. Hair should be soft and manageable. Follow up with detangling routine.

If y'all want to supercharge your cocoa treatment, try adding cacao powder. It's like cocoa powder on steroids. **superfoods rock!** (Though it's quite a bit more expensive...)

And for those considering cocoa mix... If you've never used sugar in your hair before, a cocoa mix may not be your best experience with cocoa for hair. Beyond the actual quality of the cocoa in the mixes (which IMO is often suspect), it'd be quite a multilayered experiment given all of the fillers, flavorings, sweeteners and such cocoa mixes tend to have. If you use a very good quality mix though (say 5 ingredients or organic), that might not be such a roll of the dice. But if you use a less risky cocoa mix or decide to walk on the wild side, be sure to report back!

I thought people were using cocoa powder. That is what the OP is talking about.

Folks are throwing Nestle Quik in their hair?! Wha???

I can't see any mentions on my IPhone. PM me if it is a must see. Allons y

I thought about it

I have Green & Black's Organic Hot Chocolate drink at home. In addition to organic Cocoa powder, dark chocolate, and cocoa butter, it has organic cane sugar and vanilla extract. The sugar is the first ingredient so I will try to find plain cocoa powder at whole foods or buy it online. I want to mix in my homemade body scrubs as well.

No, don't be breaking open packets of Swiss Miss and adding it to your dc's. Of course, folks have slapped worse stuff on their heads.
