I'm trying to find a good shampoo for 4ab hair that contains no sulfate and uses cocamidopropyl betaine that I can buy over the counter. Any suggestions?

Shampoo formulas usually combine several different detergents. Is there any particular reason why you specifically want cocamidopropyl betaine? Most health food store shampoos are sulfate free so you'd have several kinds to choose from. You just have to spend some time reading labels.

Unfortunately, Motions Lavish Conditioning Shampoo contains both Cocamidopropyl Betaine and SLS (ingredients: Aqua, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, PPG 5 Ceteth 10 Phosphate, Disodium Cocoamidopropionate, PEG-30 Glyceryl Cocoate, Hydrolyzed Keratin, Hydrolyzed Silk, Cocotrimonium Chloride, Glycol Distearate, Sodium C14 17 Alkyl Sec Sulfonate, Propylene Glycol, PEG-120 Methyl Glucose Dioleate, PEG-12 Dimethicone, Polyquaternium-10, Citric Acid, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Diazolidinyl Urea, Linalool, Fragrance).

Giovanni SAS Shampoo has it, too (ingredients: Aqua/Water/Eau, Rosemary Extract, Orange Extract, Mango) Extract, Lemongrass Extract, Ginkgo Biloba Extract, Coneflower Extract, Willow Bark, Sea Kelp Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Leaf Extract, Lavender Extract, Grapefruit Fruit Extract, Soybean Extract, Sodium C14 16 Olefin Sulfonate, Cocamide MEA, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Chloride, Acrylates Crosspolymer, Glycol Distearate, Amodimethicone, Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate, Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine, Decyl Glucoside, Ethylhexyglycerin, Disteareth 75 IPDI, C11 15 Pareth 7, Citric Acid, C12 16 Pareth 9, Glycerin, Trideceth 12, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance with Essential Oils).

I cannot offer an opinion as to the efficacy of these shampoos since I’ve never used them. HTH.

Try a cleansing conditioner?

L'Oreal Evercreme Cleansing Conditioner

Ingredients:Water, Cetearyl Alcohol, Sodium Cocoamphopropionate, Hydroxpropyl Startch Phosphate, Behentrimonium Chloride, Fragrance, Isopropyl Alcohol, Capryl Glycol, Glycerin, Tocopherol, Hexyl Cinnamal, Linalool, Camelina Sativa Oil/Camelina Sativa Seed Oil, Prunus Armeniaca Kernal Oil/Apricot Kernal Oil, Vitis Vinefera Seed Oil/Grape Seed Oil, Caramel, CI 19140/Yellow 5.

I don't know how the highlighted ingredient differs from the one you are looking for. They seem to have letters in common

I wanted to know a brand before I go out and spend 2hours picking up shampoos and reading every shampoo label, lol. I know my girls would know off hand that is why I post. Also with the weather change in Florida and me trying to make it to WL I figured I need to finally switch to a gentler shampoo.

I like Devacare Low Poo better than Devacurl Low Poo. Cocamidopropyl Betaine appears to be the only surfactant in both formulas.

Devacare Low Poo
ingredients: Aqueos Extracts of: Achilea Millefolium, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria), Cymbopogon Schoenanthus, Humulus Lupulus (Hops), Melissa Officinalis (Balm Mint), Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary), Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel; Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Propylene Glycol, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, PEG-75 Lanolin, PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate, Benzophenone-4, Polyquaternium-10, Hydroxyethlcellulose, Polyquaterium-7, Diazolidinyl Urea, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Ascorbic Acid, Fragrance, Red 40, Yellow 5.

Giovanni line shampoos are sulfate free and use that specific surfactant. You can find them at Target and Whole Foods.

Giovanni shampoos also use Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate. Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate can be just as harsh as SLS. Giovanni shampoos strip my hair like clarifying shampoos.

Organix shampoo - tend to just have Cocamidopropyl Betaine.

L'Oreal Ever line shampoos - they claim that they are sulfate free which I think they are but they have like 5 different versions of lighter cleaning detergents...don't know what is up with that.

J/A/S/O/N shampoo - are usually also sulfate free with Cocamidopropyl Betaine. I seen those sometimes in supermarkets and health food stores

Shea Moisture shampoos - are all sulfate free but I don't think any of them have Cocamidopropyl Betaine. You can find it at target or walgreens

It really depends on the product formulation. In the Giovanni shampoos, the olefin sulfonate is used as a co-surfactant alongside the cocomidopropyl betaine, so it isn't the main surfactant. If it was, then it would be just as bad a using a SLS shampoo. When I used to use them, Giovanni shampoos never stripped my hair, but I presume they can make your hair feel a certain way because of the protein in them. I think the concentration of surfactants is what makes a shampoo more or less stripping.

Dr. Bronner's castile soap. It doesn't have any of those ingredients you all have mentioned but its gentle, especially when diluted.

Yesterday I bought Giovanni Smooth as Silk Deep Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner from Wholefoods. I had very good results. Thanks ladies.. :spinning: Ohh they also sell it at Publix. Just FYI..
