recently i have been co washing once or twice a week and i noticed that i am getting dandruff, is this in relation to the co washing and what can i do to combat it :perplexed

You can stop applying conditioner to your scalp. Conditioner was never meant to clean but to coat and smooth hair and provide slip. I never apply conditioner to my scalp. I actually skip the inch closest to my scalp just to ensure I don't coat my scalp with it...even when I condition wash.

Perhaps rinsing really well to get every trace of conditioner from your scalp will help. Or dunking your head in a solution of ACV like I do and massaging to your heart's content to ensure your scalp is completely free of conditioner residue.

Actually, some conditioners have the same ingredients or surfactants as shampoos and can definitely lift up dirt and oils. Scrub the scalp or add sugar to the conditioner to further remove scales and dirt. Combine co-washing with an ayurveda shampoo bar or dilute a very conditioning shampoo like Creme of Nature for alternate washings so you do not get too much buildup. How do you wear the hair after co-washing? Do you let dry to the scalp? Dandruff might just be a buildup. Vo5 Strawberry is a very good co-washing product.

What kind of conditioner are you using? Sounds like you have product build-up or you may need to rinse your scalp more. Like a previous poster I recommend an ACV rinse too as your final rinse. I do one after every co-wash and my scalp is clean and moisturized.

I believe that dandruff is actually caused by a fungus or bacteria on the scalp so conditioner can't cause that. Maybe you do have product buildup as the ladies suggested.

Try adding baking soda to your cowashes every once and awhile to clarify. Also make sure you rinse really well. Maybe you can try one of of those scalp scrubber/stimulators while washing to make sure you really get your scalp clean.

I was going to say something like this. Yes the dandruff you are getting is probably build-up which is easy to get if you are in a hurry rinsing out the product. The Suaves and VO5s are great for cowashing because they are so thin. Other Conditioners usually require more rinsing.

After i co wash i usually either clip my hair back or put it in a bun to dry.

bumping for more responses. i think i read somewhere when you wash your hair frequently mmmhhh wait i cant remember now but it had something to do with sebum?

Interesting... I wasn't aware co-washing could lead to dandruff. I always cowash my scalp and hair (when I cowash) and so far I haven't had any build up or dandruff.

Make sure you rinse it off your scalp completely, don't only cowash... shampoo wash once every week or every 2 weeks to clean your scalp... do a final rinse with ACV... I think the ladies above have given some good advice.

Good luck!

Hmm. Very interesting. After I co-wash, I use a leave-in then seal with coconut oil. I also apply the coconut oil to my wet scalp as well. Idunno.
