Co wash before hard protein?

I'm just wondering if it's any more or less beneficial to do this.

I can't decide...

On one had having less clean hair blocks protein from getting into the hair shaft.

On the other hand - I'm sure quite a bit of protein would be able to penetrate, my hair would be in a softer state than if I shampooed... and since protein forms a "protective bandage" it may trap humectants/emollients/oils from my conditioner in my hair as well.

I use the heavy Aphogee Treatment.

I'm leaning more towards having shampooed hair before the protein. Then some heavy duty DC'ing afterward. Both your theories make perfect sense though.

Are you sure you need that much protein? When I use the 2-step Aphogee, I clarify my hair, then mix the stinky stuff with a moisturizing conditioner, go under some heat, rinse and DC.

Thanks for replying :)

I can't decide either... although I have never co washed before. I'm thinking about it now because my aphogee treatment date falls on a co wash date.

( Note to everyone - yes, I schedule my protein treatments. Works for me, makes sense to me to plan it, I like doing it, don't need to be schooled on it yet again  )

I only use the aphogee... my hair is doing very well with it so I'm sticking to it.

I dunno, my hair still receives everything well after a CW or rinse

ITA. I haven't poo since my last touchup over 6 ago and I do proteins and moisture or whatever I need without poo. Last night I did a protein treatement without poo and my hair is noticeable stronger and super shiny this morning. :yep: I posted it on Iris egss thread as follows:

  • whole egg + 1/4 mayo, mix well and apply to dry dirty hair, cover with plastic and turban for 45 minutes, rinse thoroughly
  • condish + molasses + glycerin, apply to hair, cover with plastic + turban for 15 minutes, rinse thoroughly
  • airdry
