- Cleansing the scalp WHEN IN BRAIDS-

OK so I’ll be wearing braids for the year or so straight, I wash 2-3 times per week, but after washes I realized that my scalp is not as clean as it should be. It still feels like build-up remains not matter how much a I scrub.

Can someone please recommend a good scalp cleanser?

A clean scalp is really the main key to growing hair

isn't witch hazel drying to the hair/scalp? i am actually sitting here with a bottle of it beside me, and I want to use it on my scalp sooooo bad :lachen:

Do you dilute your shampoos when washing in braids? That helps, making such you massage vigoruously. Also, don't forget to use a clarifying shampoo once and a while too for building up. The witch hazel works but make sure you have no cuts, etc. on your scalp.

Yes actually I only/mostly dilute

I think I will wash then use the witch hazel. I mostly baggy at nights afterwards so that should combat the dryness if any.

Where can I find witch hazel?

What shampoos are you using? I used NTM (green top), Garnier Fructis, Trader Joes Nourish and the Tingle...and they always left my scalp squeaky clean.

When you apply conditioner, do you take care not to apply it to the base of you braids? Condish has no use on your scalp so avoid wasting it there.

Do you do ACV rinses? Dunking my head in an ACV solution and massaging my scalp thoroughly always left it feeling tingly clean.

I am a braid wearer myself, for as long as I can remember. I try not to wash my braids more than once a week, twice the most. You are probably getting a lot of build up because you are washing too much and not clarifying. Try doing a dc once a week without shampooing, you will see that you will have no build up and your new growth will be soft...and oil and bag you hair up every night. Hope this helps..

great!

can anyone recommend a good clarifying shampoo?

I will also be starting a ACV's again too.

Giovanni Tea Tree Shampoo, I love this shampoo. It really tingles and cleanses the scalp well. I think I"m addicted to it. When I wash my hair w/anything else my scalp just doesn't feel clean. It doesn't contain sulfates so if you are looking for something to strip silicones from the hair this won't work.

I wear braids and weave often and wash my hair constantly like you while those styles are in my head. The best clarifying rinse I have used while my hair is in braids or weaves is baking soda.

I use 1 tbsp shampoo (optional), 1/2 tbsp baking soda to 10 oz of warm water. I mix them together in a big cup with a spoon. Then I pour over scalp in sink or shower. I massage my scalp all over really good and rinse, rinse, rinse.
Anywho my scalp and hair loves this and feels super clean afterwards.
