I read a thread about a member who lost her job and could not afford products and it got me thinking. We live in uncertain times right now and I think we should support each other. If someone loses her job and might be in need maybe we should have a charity thread where we can send products we don't want to that person. Of course, we might get a couple of scammers but I feel like giving does right for the soul. What do you guys think?

That's a nice idea, but... if she lost her job, products SHOULD be the last thing on her mind. If she's thinking about how she's gonna get hair products when she's faced with losing her job, she needs to get her priorities straight.:nono:

ETA:: This is my general answer. I didn't see the thread being referred to, so this is not personal to anyone. I just wanted to clear that up:yep:

She wasnt asking for anything , was just asking advice about maintaining a low budget regimen

dang its a cold cold world

She still has to manage her hair

and again she didnt ask nobody for nothin

Right...COLD:wallbash:

She was merely asking questions on how to stretch things out or replace things with cheaper products. People around here aint right:nono:

No, I'm not cold at all. I'm a very caring person, infact. I did not see the thread you guys are referring to and when I saw this thread it made it sound like just sending stuff to someone who's home after losing their job. Not asking for suggestions on lower cost hair care. This is merely a misunderstanding. I was putting myself in the situation and thinking of what I would be doing if I were in the same situation and I seriously wouldn't be thinking about haircare.... that's all.

*off to find the thread you ladies are referring to.*

This sounds like a good idea to me. I'd feel silly trying to sell things on the swap board for a couple of bucks, I'd rather give it away! And how many ladies have tubs of relaxer or condishes they don't like that they wouldn't mind cheapy sending to someone. I like the idea!

If you're down on your luck like that, focusing on hair could be the one thing to take your mind of of "things" and bring a little joy into your life. No harm in that!

Sounds good. I don't think I've ever sold anything on the swap board. I always send to what I'm not using to other members.

This sounds like a GREAT idea. I read the thread you were refering to and have some products I'd be willing to donate to her and others. Please keep me updated. I'm not on LHCF much, so PM me here or at my fotki. I'm SERIOUSLY interested! :grinwink:

I have acquired quite a bit, and am afraid I may have to move out if I buy 5 more products! I would love to help someone out that truly needs it, and I agree with the poster that said in so many words that it may help out her state of mind.

Hey it IS necessary to keep up your hair...you gotta go on job interviews, right?

All of us with kids could pass on old clothes.
We could pass on business suits we no longer use, no longer fit, etc.

If you're in the area...you can always pass me your resume. I can't promise you a job (you'll have to sell yourself) but I can try and get you an interview (just don't tarnish my name). I don't have a special position or anything but I help to fill positions. I'm ALWAYS here to help. I'll send you a list of temp agencies as well.

And I'll help you find childcare while you interview. I know a couple of providers who do hourly/drop-in care.

I WAS that person before so I love to help out because I no what it feels like to be without help.

She could also go the ayurvedic route and all she needs is a good 99cent shikakai bar soap, $2.99 bottle of amla to tide her over until she gets back on her feet :(

off topic: Can someone please send me the link to that thread. With gas at $4.64 I would welcome any tips for haircare on a low budget:blush:.

Thanks.

This is a great idea!!!!

I work at a nonprofit organization and I meet people everyday that are a tad-bit down on their luck, and are very appreciative for the little things that make life easier! Target is one of our donors and we receive hair care products all the time, I would be more than willing to help a fellow LHCF sister out in her time of need!

...again great idea!!!!

I completely agree!!!LOL! Taking care of my hair does bring me joy, it brightens my mornings. I had lost my job a while back and it didnt stop me from cooking, cleaning, continuing with my hair regimen, especially co-washing, doing my own pedicures and manicures...I kept looking for another job but that didn't mean I had to drop the ball on any of the other things that were important to me and that includes my hair progress.
Wonderful idea, OP! I don't think I told any members when I had lost my job, but if I had, and someone would've sent me a pm telling me they would like to send me some cheapie conditioners, coconut oil, hot oil, anything lol-- it would've made my day. :superbanana::woohoo2: :yahoo: Now Im looking for that thread too--gas cost is kickin my ___.

I think this is a GREAT idea!

No matter what you go through, you still want to feel like a woman, so if doing your hair helps you feel this way then more power to you.

I read an interesting article a while back that talked about cosmetics during the Soviet cold war. Even though the country was hit with financial hardships, the sale of lipstick didn't decrease much. Women would also use beet juice to create eyeshadow and blush. One could argue that they had bigger things to worry about, but bottom line, you do what you need to do to keep your self esteem up though tough times.

I agree with this. Also sometimes when you are down because of life situations, little things like hair care can just give you a little escape now and again. It did for me and I figure I'm not the only one that feels like this. I think it's a good idea.

I think this is a great idea!:yep: I have been in this situation before so I can truly understand what this sista is going through. She wasn't asking for donations, she was asking for product suggestions. Believe me, the rising cost of diesel has affected me in a way that I can wonder what can happen to the company that I drive for. I pray daily that fuel costs will not have me in a situation that will have me looking for another job as well. This is one of the main reasons why I stay on the site so much. It's not all about product reviews and the latest bandwagons, I'm learning how to take care of my OWN hair. I'm happy to see so many sistas that are willing to step in and help others. There's no telling what type of blessing this is to that sista and others who can relate.

Anyway, forgive me. I got carried away:grin: so, I'll get off of the soap box now. OP, thank you for starting this thread. I found the topic everyone is looking for. I love this site. God Bless you all!

good googley moogley where do you live where gas is that much? it just hit 4bucks in dc

I just wanted to clarify my bolded statement. The bolded statement is to inform others that haven't read the other thread. I'm not saying that we shouldn't help others, I just letting others know what the situation is about. I'm sure someone will probably think "Oh, somebody's begging for hair care products". That's not the case. I just wanted to make sure no one would try to label me as a hater.:look:

Dang, that sounds like diesel in the west.:perplexed I past West Hollywood and Thousand Oaks last week and I saw a fuel stop selling diesel for $5.15 a gallon! That's ridiculous. The average 18 wheeler requires 200-300 gallons if fueling up from "E" to "full".

wow OP i was thinking of starting a spinoff from that thread too!

because it got me thinking about the few products that they have at homeless shelters. not just hair but everything. last year this time i was still in a "transitional housing" apartment and since my major was social work i was assisting the resident BSW with a lot of things... there used to be 2 of them but the shelter couldn't afford to pay both of them. so i helped as best i could come up with ideas and activites. once we had worked out a day for all the ladies to get a free makeover at one of the local beauty colleges... i didn't get to go because i was already working at that time, but we arranged day care for those with younger kids and it was on a Monday so the older kids were in school.

as someone who's been on the other side of it, you'd be surprised how something so seemingly unimportant can be to people who can't afford such luxuries. :yep: so i not only urge you to help other members on our board who need a little extra help right now, but also if you're a serious PJ like me and you have old product that you KNOW you're not gonna use or miss... will you please donate them to a local homeless shelter/women's shelter? sometimes all they have to use are those travel-sized hotel shampoos and conditioners.

*i'm off my soapbox now, i promise*

As the originator of the other thread, let me chime in here.

I think that this is a great idea for ladies that may need it.

I don't think however that I need it. We are not that far gone. Yes, I am between contracts. I hope to get another one soon. I have a savings to last me for the next 5-6 months. That is paying all my bills, paying down debt, and paying my tithes.

Hair care is still a priority for me and my daughters. We don't want to look jacked up anymore than anyone else. But haircare products do not rank at the top of my budget list. It ranks down there with vacation funds, blow money, and restaurant money. The bottom.

So I asked for ideas on cheap haircare. I got a lot of suggestions from the ladies on this board. And a lot of offers from people willing to send me stuff. I also found a thread called Recession Haircare that I am also checking out.

Let me say :thankyou: to all who pmed and offered me items. Also :bighug:thank you to the ladies in this thread who feel lead to support a sista who is down on her luck. That speaks volumes about the kind of people who post here. :grouphug:

Now I aint too proud to turn anything down. But I wouldn't feel right taking items from anyone when there are others out there who are much worse off than me. Much worse.

I will gladly pay for items that anyone wants to sell me. I will also check the swap board. I had not even thought of looking there.

Oh yeah, def. check the swap board. That might get you by. People sometimes sell stuff for so cheap!
