Sabie, taking a multi vitamin is a good first step to healthy hair. There are some vitamins without which hair can thin and break or be completely lost and seem not to grow...and so an addition of these vitamins may show an improvement in texture/growth. But they are supplements that you may already be getting if you are eating well and are on a multi vitamin supplement like Centrum. And an excess of them simply gets flushed out of your system. What's more, a lot of them work better in the company of others and so a multi is a wise choice. As long as your body is getting all the nutrients it needs, then your hair will get its share. If your body is lacking any nutrient, focusing on the "usual suspects" like biotin, B5, MSM at the exclusion of a multi is not a wise move, IMO since not only do these work better when paired with specific other nutrients but your body will help itself to them first and leave little for your hair. Keeping your body happy is one way to ensure healthy hair.

Cathy Howse has 18 inches (prob. more) of hair (scalp to ends) - if my memory serves me right - and she swears just by zinc and iron. Maybe she takes a multi too or she eats well. So just because you don't have the "usual suspects" in huge quantities, doesn't mean you won't achieve growth too.

And just in case you're not convinced that Centrum is a good choice, check this out.

I am currently taking Centrum Performance. Prior to this, I took the regular Centrum formula. I stopped taking the Centrum in 1999, because I thought the vitamin was responsible for my significant weight gain ( some say that vitamins cause increased appetite, and thus, weight gain).

However, the vitamin, as I discovered, was not, in fact, the culprit, but another medication I was (and still am) taking.

Anyway, I visited my local GNC on last Saturday morning (8/23.03), and learned that Centrum is not only a synthetic vitamin, but is also not a time release vitamin. Which is to say, that each morning I take my Centrum Performance vitamin, the body absorbs as much as it is able at the time, with the rest expended as waste.

I still have about 2 months' worth of Centrum Performance to consume. Following that, I will return to GNC and purchase something else.

I know people like Centrum because they are inexpensive and readily available but I heard they just DON'T DISSOLVE. I would rather take a higher quality vitamin and take it every other day if need be then wasting my time on Centrum.

Synthetic means it's made and not obtained naturally. This link has more info.

Thanks, that link was quite interesting.

You know sometimes I sit at the breakfast table and wonder if I am overdosing on vits. I would eat a bowl of total with rasin cereal, a boiled egg an apple and a half a cup of yogurt. These are pretty much what I eat for breakfast everyday if nothing else. Now I look at the Total box and I can plainly see the 1 million vitamins and minerals in this cereal, PLUS I know that one apple alone contains other vitamins,as well as the yogurt and the egg... BUT then I will STILL reach for that Centrum, etc. Yeah, I could very well be over dosing at the breakfast table. Great article, makes me want to rethink my intake habits.

Daughter, thanks for a good thought-provoking article.

My mother who's a nutritionist always served (and encouraged us to seek) a well-balanced diet and never once suggested that we take vitamin supplements. It wasn't until I was no longer living at home that I developed allergies to foods and had to go on a restricted diet and supplement that with bottled vitamins. And I guess knowing I was getting vitamins made me a little slack in watching what I ate. So yes, I'm sure I'm not doing as well as I could be doing if Mommy still fed me and I took no vits. All the stuff I keep seeing mentioned here, like eggs are good for hair growth, are things she preached to me as I grew up, but I just put that down to the protein and so just assumed any protein would be no different. I didn't know about other goodies in eggs. Granted my hair didn't grow long by any stretch of the word, but I think that had more to do how I cared for it...knowledge of which I had none at the time.
