Okay, ladies . . . here goes:

I have had my hair in twists since July. Since that time, I have been washing and redoing them faithfully ~ every two weeks. I washed my hair with the twists in, and then would take them down one by one and redo them afterwards.

Well, Tuesday, I decided to take them all down to wash. That is when the nightmare started! Thank goodness I didn't have to be anywhere that I couldn't reschedule that day (or the next--yes, it was that bad /images/graemlins/crazy.gif).

I started taking my twists down Tuesday around noon. There were tangles and locking hair all over! I had planned to take them down and wash on Tuesday, but I did't finish removing them until 11pm Tuesday NIGHT! I did take several breaks though because my arms were tired. I was trying to work out the tangles as I took them down. I was in no mood for a comb out after washing so I decided to wait until the next morning--btw, I don't think this had anything to do with how bad things turned out. /images/graemlins/ohwell.gif

Jump to Wednesday morning 11am when I wash. I divided my hair into 6 sections. Then, I deep conditioned for an hour after washing with a plastic cap. I used PLENTY of conditioner hoping to work out more tangles. I didn't use a comb at this point--just my fingers, but there was absolutely no slip. My hair felt matted. I had my Giovanni direct leave-in ready because I already suspected I would have to deal with even more tangles during the comb out. But, I could not possibly have imagined the mess I would have to deal with. /images/graemlins/nono.gif

I didn't finish combing out my hair until 5am this morning--yes, you might as well say I stayed up all night. I had an important meeting today at 11am, so I took very few breaks. I had hoped to finish the comb out yesterday and get up at 7am this morning to press. Can anyone imagine how frustrated I was? /images/graemlins/wallbash.gif I had the scissors out and everything. I lost so much hair. /images/graemlins/cry3.gif I don't know if it was shed hair that had begun to lock or what. Up until these past few days I thought twists were the best style ever.

Okay, it gets worse . . .

Even after going to bed at 5, I still planned to get up at 7. But, I didn't wake up until 10 o'clock. /images/graemlins/shocked.gif I don't know what happened! At first, I panicked and was trying to figure out how I could get out of the meeting or how I could press my hair in 30 minutes (yeah, I didn't dwell on that one very long). It was such short notice, I thought it would be very bad form for me to cancel the meeting. I had to think fast! Thank goodness I had put my hair in big twists that were decent looking. I pulled them back into a ponytail. Then I pulled out a pair of my nicer glasses and applied more makeup than usual. These were all to draw attention away from my hair. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif Fortunately, my day was still a success.

So I learned a few lessons from all of this:

1. Never leave twists in my hair for that long. (I think I was supposed to learn this same lesson a couple of years ago, but I forgot. /images/graemlins/look.gif)

2. Never go to bed with hair in a style that you cannot quickly (less than 5 minutes) pull together in a style to be worn to work, school or other important places -- if you will need to be there the next day.

I'm sure there are a few more in there, but I'll add them tomorrow. Right now, I need to go to bed. Good night, ladies.

I'm sorry to hear that. Did you wind up cutting your hair?

I only cut it when I encountered knots that were impossible to untangle. There was also quite a bit of breakage with removing tangles. The only reason I took so long trying to remove tangles is because I was trying to lose as little hair as possible.

Wow! I'm sorry you had to go through all of this but I'm glad it all worked out in the end and you were still able to make your meeting. /images/graemlins/smile.gif I'm sure it was definitely a lesson well learned!

Next time try a braid and lock removal creme. I think that someone recommended one earlier this week on the board. I will try to find the thread for you and bump it up /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I wonder your hair started to lock if you were redoing them every two weeks?

I was thinking the same thing. How did your hair get so tangled if you remove your twists every 2 weeks? /images/graemlins/confused.gif How long did you leave this particular set of twists in?

LOL, /images/graemlins/laugh.gif I've failed to follow rule No. 2 several times and been late because of it! You can't really say, sorry I was late, I was foolin' with my hair, especially if it still looks crazy when you finally show up. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Wow, sorry you had to go through that. I have learned my own lesson about twists: I MYSELF am unable to wet or wash my hair is twists. My hair begins to lock and matte. For the length of time you had yours in, I can't even begin to imagine how that was taking them down. I can't wear twists longer than 4 or 5 days, even then I struggle with tangles.

Your lesson number 2...oh how I have learned that. I learned the hard way though!

Wow sorry to hear that. i usually wear twists 3-4weeks at a time and i wash them weekly with no problems taking them down. did i read right or did u really keep the same set of twists since july? /images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Sorry to hear this, pressncurl. I had my hair lock up on me too, when removing braids. I know how scary and frustrating it can be. It will come back, don't worry /images/graemlins/kiss.gif.

I was redoing the every two weeks, but I think the problem may be that I wasn't combing my hair out "with a comb" every time I redid them. I was applying a detangling leave-in and finger combing before retwisting. At least, I think that was the culprit.

Next time I do twists I will just take them all down and wash every 2-3 weeks. I was being lazy because I didn't want to have to redo the parts every time, and then I guess even lazier /images/graemlins/ohwell.gif because I wasn't combing out each time. It just turns out they're not as low maintenance as I was making them. /images/graemlins/look.gif

Well, sort of the same set. The parts were the same, but I was taking them down individually and retwisting every two weeks or so.

Yeah, I thought about this, but too late into the process. Next time I will be sure to have some on hand.

I redo my twists (although they are sloppy and kept under wraps) ever 2 to 3 weeks. I take them down, dtangle with my fingers and was and condition. I retwist them while my hair is wet and I use a wide tooth comb to detangle while wet. Twists have saved my hair from too much breakage but you really can't leave them in for longer than 3 weeks especially if you are natural because when you get newgrowth, your hair starts to twist within itself. This happens to me when I do not detangle properly (I am 4b super coily).

Hi, Laketta. I just looked at your "Progress Part Two" pics. My breakage pile was 3-4 times the size of yours (in picture #9). /images/graemlins/frown.gif
