Could you ladies please share with me how you are using castor oil? And how it has affected your hair.

I sometimes put it on my edges -especially my nape during the winter- but I recently got a big trim and it now really weighs my hair down. I want to wear my hair out more often so I keep my leave-in light.

Year ago when my hair was thicker I use to add it to my deep conditioner but now it is too much for my hair.

I would still like to use it but I am no longer sure how to do so.

thanks!

I love love love castor oil on my ends (did I mention I love it on mah ends?). However, I usually use a lighter oil, like jojoba, on the length of my hair.

SmileyNY, how do you use it on your ends? Do you add it when your ends are damp?

I have tried using it on damp hair and it makes my hair sticky.

I use castor oil to seal on the length of my hair. I mustn't let any oils touch my scalp. though or my scalp breaks out in the most sore and resistant spots ever known to man. Lol. If i happen to accidently scratch one of them...:burning: :freakout: :burning:

I have very fine hair and straight castor really weighs my hair down, so I use a castor oil blend. Castor, EVOO, & Coconut oil. I use it mostly as a leave in on damp hair before my moisturizer. But I also use the same mix for deep oiling, hot oiling, GHEing and DCing.

My hair loves castor oil. I use it to detangle, for hot oil treatments, add it to my DC's, prepoo, and for sealing.

I heard it makes your hair grow, so I will apply it directly to my scalp and see what happens.

melissa-bee, do you add anything to it or do you use it straight?

Maybe I am using the wrong type. I can barely spread it on my hands, its so thick.

I use it straight. It is very thick and hard to spread so I think you do have the right one. You don't need to use too much just make sure your hands are warm. As I apply it to damp hair it makes it easier to spread once I apply it.
My hair gets sticky if I use to much
I wouldn't recommend a relaxed head or someone with fine hair to use it.

I use it when bunning my hair. Bun, spray with water and slick back with castor oil then tie down. My hair is soft but I'd still have control over the fly aways.

I have dry skin. At night I cleanse my face, pat with water and rub a small amount of castor oil on my face. It keeps my skin moist and supple. My face has taken on a radiant glow.

My hair is mostly fine, but high density, and I LOVE castor oil. I use it for everything- a lighter application on the length of my hair to seal; a heavier app on my ends before I tuck and hide them away; a little in my DC; a bit in my co-washes; concentrated apps on my edges nightly to encourage them to contine to fill in.

It is my primary oil and I love it. Did I say that already? LOL

ETA: My hair is always damp to some degree before I apply it, if this makes a difference.

I put it in an applicator bottle and apply it to my scalp. I use to use it religiously but stopped. I plan on using it more frequently. I remember having thicker hair after use.

No. I usually don't oil my hair when it's wet. I use it to seal after moisturizing.

When I'm being good.... I separate my hair into 4 braids after thoroughly moisturizing. Once it's in the braids, I add castor oil to the last 3 inches of each braid.

When I'm being bad... I use a little moisturizer to put all of my hair back into a bun. Before a roll up the bun, I put castor oil on my ends.

Country gal, how does it affect your scalp? Because it is so think I would imagine it would cause issues. I never use anything on my scale, except for a couple of days before a touch-up to protect it.

I mix it in an 8 oz bottle along with the following oils ( hemp, grapeseed, shea, macadamia, avocado, sweet almond, argon, and jojoba) so it's not thick. I use my Castor oil mixture for everything- moisturizing my skin, oiling my scalp, sealing my ends, as a pre-poo, in my conditioner, in my whipped shea mixture. Grapeseed oil imo is a lighter version of castor oil.

OK, thanks ladies.

It sounds like the best option is to cut the castor oil with another oil. I think I will do that.

thanks again!

I use it on my scalp but I co wash everyday so I don't have a problem at all. I just added to my mines essential oils and I do my scalp massage every night.

madamdot- I didn't have any problems with my scalp. I use to oil my scalp with it. With the applicator bottle I have better control on the amount being used.

I cut my castor oil with a lighter oil like grapeseed or olive.

I live castor oil for the way it coats my hair. My strands are so much more thick and my hair feels more moisturized when I add it to a dc or use it for oil rinsing.

I like JBCO & Extra Dark JBCO. I also like the JBCO w/Pimento Oil (Blend). :lick:

JBCO is suppose to have high ash content which aids in growth/thicker hair. Thus, the smoky-smell.

However, it doesn't linger in your hair. Didn't care for the JBCO w/Lavender. The smell was a bit much.:ohwell:

Just give it to me straight.

But if I want 'good smelling' Castor Oil, I'll just grab Hairveda's Cocosta Oil.

melissa-bee, I'm relaxed and I'm able to use castor without issues. I do agree that a little goes a long way.

madamdot, I've used regular laxative castor and jbco. I prefer jbco because it's said to have a higher ash content, etc. See IDareT'sHair posting above (she posted this in the jbco thread). I'm able to apply it on wet, damp or dry hair.

I spritz hair first w/water or special mix; or get a little aloe vera gel/oil combo and mix it in hand. In each instance, I use just a little tiny bit of castor oil, it spreads so well. I never apply it straight up b/c its too thick; and you maximize its affect when you apply w/water (avj or avg), or to damp hair

my oil mix consists of:
kukui
evco
evoo
meadowfoam
castor

i seal with this after using a creamy moisturizer several times a week. i can't wait to try black castor oil in the near future. is jbco lighter than regular castor? i would add other oils and essential oils to it.

I use it on dry ends when rebraiding my braidout at night to prevent SSKs. I use it to seal damp ends. I'm supposed to be trying it on my temples but haven't been consistent. It's a definite staple.

I try not to use castor oil on my hair shaft at all - I mix castor oil with aloe vera gel and then spread that on my scalp. Works well for me!

I use it on my scalp three times a week. I seal my ends with it every other day. I also add it to my conditioner or if I am using a bottle shampoo to dilute it.

I use it on wet/damp hair like I used to do with silicone serums, to smooth my ends. Or I add a light layer on top when deep conditioning. If something's wrong, the weather is crazy, products don't work, I haven't done my homework, etc... I just coat my hair with it, pin it up, let it be for an hour and then and co-wash it out.

I use it on damp hair as a leave in..it's the only thing that doesn't leave my hair crunchy, crispy, or any other other adjective associated with savoury snacks that i wouldn't want associated with my hair!
Also used it on my edges, they've grown back in nicely :)

I can answer! I'm excited b/c I found the perfect way to use castor oil. For the past about 3 wks I've been mixing castor oil and KBB hair milk. I think the key for me is to mix the castor oil w/ a very light non greasy cream. Kbb is very basic and few ingredients so this works. I think any light weight leave in would work.

This Sat I got the bright idea to try and cut castor oil w/ coconut oil and oiled my scalp.. What a fail, my hair was such a greasy disgusting mess that I had to rewash and rollerset all over again :nono:.

Since i've been using the castor oil I notice a major decrease in hair shedding from my scalp, much softer hair it feels emollient w/o being overly greasy, and I think it's doing something for my scalp. B/c my hair and scalp doesn't have that 'dirty' feel as it usually would when I feel the need to wash. In the past if I oil my scalp, even with regular oils my hair doesn't feel soft, just greasy and kinda crispy. Something about castor oil makes my hair feel pliable. You just have to find a way to use it to make it for you. I think the reason why the castor oil mixture doesn't make my hair feel dirty is b/c I read that it cleans the scalp. Years ago, I used to use it religiously and my hair was in great shape. The problem I had with it then was that it was too thick and sometimes could be hard to wash out. Castor oil can be extremely heavy and greasy so the key is def finding a way to use it that works for you. I've also been using it on my face at night after I wash it. Makes my skin glow and keeps it emollient, the other oils I've used on my face doesn't give the same feel. Castor oil is viscous and very emollient.
