Caruso Masters! In here please...

So I FINALLY went out today and bought myself my very first Caruso set. I can only tell you how antsy I've been to try these out, especially since I love wearing my hair curly, but am afraid of using a damaging curling iron to do so, and my rollersets tend to only last 2 days! So I've searched through a lot of the Caruso threads and picked up some good advice (like using end papers to eliminate frizz) and I'm currently reading through the booklet that comes with it as if I'm going to be tested on this . But I thought I'd turn to you ladies who use these regularly with great results. What's are your super secret techniques that you use to acheive a fabulous Caruso set? Inquiring minds want to know!

I have to say that after the first use I quickly returned my curlers. I ended up with big puffy curls. Basically a curly afro. I was looking for pretty silky curls. My hair wasn't silky at all. I guess the moisturize thing just doesn't work well for me. I'll stick to the dry heat.

*sigh* I'm hoping for replies as well, but I was so antsy to use them that I just went ahead and did it anyway!! I didn't follow any of the styling guides either, I just wanted to PLAY! So I am sitting here with about 10 pleasantly warm rollers in my hair just waiting to see what happens... I will say this though, it steams up fast! I put cool water in it, plugged it in, then went downstairs to get the end papers that I had bought, when I came back upstairs there was steam!

you really have to get use to using these things. when i initially started out i hated them. the only tips i can think of is not leaving the rollers on the steamer for too long.5-7 seconds will do it. also, sleeping in them overnight help the curls to last longer.

One word of advice is to make sure that you use end papers on your hair so as not too get spits when they come in conatct with the foam, make sure that when u have the end papers on that you pull the roller so that it is tight like a rollerset and then slip on the cover, and you would get silky straight curls. HTH

Use ends papers, only let the each roller steam for 3-5 secs, leave in for at least 45 mins then take out. I do not put setting lotion in with the water even though some do that to hold the curl better. I just use plain water let set for at least 45 mins then good to go

I used mine even before LHCF and I love them! Even if I'm wearing a bun, I'll use the Caruso for a quick, loose spiral on the side.

One trick I have tried successfully is putting a little setting lotion on my hair (like lottabody) before rolling it with the rollers and end papers. It does make the curl last much longer. I don't always do this though, but it does work.

I enjoy making the style as seen in my avatar and it's so quick and easy!

This is my first post here at LHCF and while I am not growing my hair long yet (I just got it cut 6 wks ago to start afresh), I love this forum because of all the great advice it gives.
In regards to the Caruso rollers they have been around since the 70's(I saw them demonstrated in Orbachs on 34th street when I was a preteen) and have used them since the early 90's. All I do is wet wrap my hair,air dry, pop the rollers in(I use the jumbo ones to keep my wrap with a slight bend)for several seconds. I use end papers and aveda emollient/Kiehls silk groom as leave ins,although I am going to try Redken Heat Glide because Aveda can be a bit expensive. I have never had any damage and it has kept my hair soft and moisturized. I am not a master with curling irons/flat irons(they cause so much damage) so I leave to my stylist every 6 weeks. Rollers have always been my thing,I can roll/wrap better because I was practically raised on rollers and the hot comb. I am just glad I don't have to sleep in rollers anymore

I'm not a master by any means but I've eliminated the puffiness! now I end up with silky curls I was leaving the curlers on the steamer for too long and this causes it to collect beads of water that when they come in contact with your hair makes it frizzy. Now I only leave it on 5-7 seconds max. Now I put the curler on the steamer for bout 5 secs and then take it off and give it a frim shake to get rid of any condensation, roll my hair up quickly and tight, then put the cap on the steamer for about 5 secs, take off steamer, firm shake with wrist, place over roller. I'm working up to trying to make it quicker but i guess that'll come with more practice. HTH

Thanks for all the replies ladies!! I did end up using them last night just because I was too excited to wait. I just steamed up some rollers and slapped them on my head anywhich way (with ends papers of course), I left the rollers on te steamer too long (10-15 seconds!) so I left them in my hair long, maybe for about 45 minutes. All I can say is that if it were possible to marry these rollers I just might!! My hair came out very soft, with wonderful springy curls. I finger combed them....then got style-happy and combed them out with a wide tooth comb so I was left with lot's of volume and a little wave to the hair. My bangs were, well, BANGIN'! They haven't looked this good since I threw away my curling iron months ago. Ladies if any of you are on the fence about getting, or using these, I say hesitate no longer! Sorry for sounding like a pusha, but I am so happy with the results of these!

I'm glad they worked well for you! I used mine again today and I only left them in for about 15 minutes and I had nice curls. I didn't want anything too tight and didn't want to use any heat, so this was perfect.

One way I make it quicker is to leave out the step of putting the roller cap on the steamer. I've only done that once or twice over the years. It is optional.

I've used the caruso rolelrs for about 8 years...and they're the best thing I've ever done for my hair, hands down.

I use the jumbo rollers, and only leave them in my hair for about 10 minutes...and my hair always comes out silky smooth and curly. No special tricks really, for me it was just a matter of getting used to them and how they work.

Bre Bre, from your avatar, it looks like you could use the rollers on your hair, it should be long enough.

I too returned to using Caruso rollers since joining LHCF. The first time I tried them many years ago- I hated them- frizz city. This time around I expiramented until I got it perfect. I leave the rollers on the steamer for 3-4 secs, and in my hair for 10-20 mins. I may steam the cap for 2-3 secs if I am rolling a very thick section of hair. I then let the hair set after removing the rollers for about 5 mins before styling. I don't use end papers. If I want tighter curls I'll rub a little mousse through my hair before putting in the curlers. I also use bottled distilled water in the steamer for better qualtiy water on my hair (& to help the steamer stay free of calcium build up).

All I have to say is practice, practice, practice- but they are sooo worth it! My hair turns out much better than when I used to use a curling iron!

I am *possibly* about to buy the rollers on EBAY. Does it only come with 14 rollers of various size? Did you guys buy more rollers or is 14 enough? I'm confused because the rollers are of various sizes which seems it wouldn't be enough.

This is were I got mine and I think having 30 rollers is better than having 14 even if you don't use them all...you get more rollers in every size.
