Hello Ladies,
I was doing a search on how to care for my twists w/extensions once I get them done tomorrow. I found a couple of things but nothing to serious. I will be doing a deep condition tonight when I get home.
Other than that, my questions are:
1. How often do you recommend rinsing them? With what products?
2. What type of moisturizers/ leave ins do you use? (I have a concoction of distilled water, almond oil, rosemary, and peppermint oils will that do?)
3. How long did yours last?
4. Is Kankelon the best to use?

Sorry for so many, but I tend to be very in depth with my preparations! :D

TIA

Well I have the flufy twists. See my fotki album, My fotki. What Ive been doing is keeping both my hair and scalp super moisturized due to my hair drying out easily. I have an MTG concoction of (get ready): MTG..Biotin...Mango Butter (Elasta)..5oz peppermint and rosemarie oils....Surge...olive oil......Parvenu oil...and a mix of oils from Wonder 8 oils (could be Wonder gro). It helps mask the smell of the MTG but I am looking to make another mix sans peppermint and rosemarie as my fiance says I smell like Bengay..

Anyhoo, the braider said not to wash them but I NEED to washmy scalp at least ONCE a week. So in the 2 weeks Ive had them Ive washed about 3 times (thel ast one due to me swimming in the pool). Tonight I plan to start adding Elasta QP breakage control serum to the part of the braid that has MY hair along the braid. This way I can make sure it is moisturized and strong from the protein.

1. How often do you recommend rinsing them? With what products?
I wash my scalp with a clarifying shampp from Suave

2. What type of moisturizers/ leave ins do you use? (I have a concoction of distilled water, almond oil, rosemary, and peppermint oils will that do?)
SEe response above

3. How long did yours last?
Ive had them about 2 weeks and had her rebraid the EDGES two times since getting them. MY edges are really soft and slip off easily.

4. Is Kankelon the best to use?
She didnt use that on my hair. She used Afrosyns? Its thek ind of hair that looks like an afro once you pull it out. Thats what makes the braid fluffy.

I got them 2 years ago when I went to the Bahamas. They totally ate my hair up. I thought I was doing a good job of keeping my hair moisturized. I only had them in for 4 weeks and when I took them out my hair looked like someone was chewing it. My stylist said that the hair that the braider used was too harsh and toxic to hair. So, I'm telling you this, so maybe you can be little more careful than I was in the type of hair you use and keeping your hair moisturized. Of course everyone's hair is different.

Yes, keeping it moisturized and the extension part moisturized too because that comes in contact with your hair. When I removed my cornrows the other day my hair was super moisturized and yea oily. But I would rather that than it be dried and parched. Ive had to have them redo some strands already BUT I would rather that than they stay in and damage my hair from me not moisturizing it. So get your fav leave in and spray the length of the strand.

First time poster here (I'll intro later). I currently have two strand extended twists. I've had them in for almost three weeks. You can see my album for the finished product. Every other day I moisturize with a mixture of water (mostly), Organics carrot oil and ORS dry scalp (like the fragrance) with a couple of drops of lavender & tea tree essential oils. I moisturize the scalp and the braid. Every week I plait the braids into 4-5 larger braids and wash with a diluted clarifying shampoo, diluted ACV rinse, diluted Suave coconut conditioner and finish with Infusium leave in. Then I do a full strength oil with the dry scalp oil.

I sleep with a satin bonnet and/or a satin pillowcase.

My braider (she does lots of natural hair care too) prefers the Afrelle kankelon (yellow and red package) because she says she doesn't get the tiny cuts on her fingers (which also cut your hair apparently). It took about 4-5 packs of hair to finish my hair.

Mscounselor, I think we're on the same hair path (transitioning since March, and now extended twists). I'd hoped to keep the twists in for close to three months. Now I'm just hoping for 8 weeks. I will try to add the photos of what the braids look like now, but I think I'll have too much new growth to keep them in past 8 weeks. I'm debating if I want to rebraid the perimeter next week (have to find a new braider though, long story).

I've had both the silky twists and the kinky twists. Silky:washed hair every 2 weeks and sprayed a leave in conditioner on them. In between I'd use a waterless shampoo so that my braids would last. This style lasted about 4 or 5 weeks. Kinky: same shampoo method but sometimes I'd put a light conditioner on my braids and then rinse most of the conditioner out so that it wouldn't leave whitish look. The kinky twists lasted two months. I also sprayed a leave in conditioner on them every day before I got in the shower.

Whats the difference between the two? Is one better than the other?

Thanks for the information and good luck on your transition.
I don't know how long I want mine in. I have to go home(Jamaica) for 2 weeks in August 3rd so I have to see how the hair looks by then. If it lasts for that long that would be great. I agree with the ng though. My hair tends to show out with braids.

My braider did the silky twists with toyokalon hair which is silkier than relaxed hair so it looks like relaxed hair that is twisted. She used puffy screw hair which is kanekalon hair to do the kinky twists and I prefer these with my natural hair. Here's a pic of kinky twists.

The next pic is one of silky or senegalese twists.

DITTO I will never get two strand twists again :nono: UNLESS its with the really expensive human or silk fiber hair . That wooly syntehetic hair was awful..I didnt realize what bad effect it had on my hair until some months afterward.
