How is caring for texturized hair different from caring for relaxed or natural hair. My 14 year old will be getting a texturizer in a couple of weeks and I want to make sure i am prepared to care for it properly and teach her to do the same. I do not plan for her to wear it straight often. She will mainly wear it curly or braided. her hair texture is 4a, very thick and cottony (yet the strands are fine). If you are texturized, what is your regimen? What products do you use? How often do you get touchups? Thanks.

I finally gave up on my texturized hair and fully relaxed. For me I think it's either I gotta be natural or fully relaxed. My texturized hair kept drying out so much and it can't stand being wet all the time, over conditioning and moisturizing made it shed too much. I must admit I was using a no-lye so that probably contributed to the dryness. I'm now using lye. I hope your daughter has a better experience than I did. ModelChick has a great texturized album. Maybe try a search for some of her posts, she's had great success texturizing.

Excellent question! I have decided to start texturizing so I would love to know the answer to this question

I have texturized hair and I can say that there are lots of pros and cons. I will start with the pros.

Pros:
Wash and go hair
easier to manage ultra thick type 4a hair
I can choose between curly and straight hair style
I can still wear braids
I can still do twistouts/braidouts/knotouts
I can stretch my relaxers up to 6 months, currently I've been stretching for 8 months, this allows me to camoflauge between NG and curly hair.

Cons:
As with any chemical service, You must really be careful with using too much heat or you'll have damage.
You must be consistent with giving yourself deep treatments and moisturizing treatments
If texturizer is not done right you'll have to deal with both over and underprocessing
You'll still have to deal with some dryness (ends) and tangles
You'll have have to be gentle with both textures
You may have a hard time finding a curl defining products but several are quite good like kinky-curly, or curly pudding but expensive!

My regime
When I'm not in braids I often wear twistouts and braidouts but every now and then I do wear my wash and go look. Here is my regime

1. Moisturizing Shampoo/deep or moisturizing treatment
2. Leave-in treatment such as Giovanni direct leave-in
3. A styling lotion and some alcohol free gel to get the curls pumping

Here are examples of my texturized hair 1. blown straight 2. curly style-wet 3. blown straight and flat ironed...HTH:)

Alli: why do twist/braidouts when your hair is already curly?

Simply put I love options and I love to experiment! I mainly do twistouts and braidouts when my wash and go won't look right, like around 6 or 7 months of stretching. Doing these styles allow me to continue to extend my texturizers. Also I love different curl looks and there are about 4 or 5 that I really like playing around with.

This is my twistout, I love it cause I have a real funky kinda dred/curl look working.

I also love the big curls I get with twistouts.

I care for my texturized hair just like I would care for relaxed hair (regular protein trematments is someting that most naturals don't seem to do)... the only thing is that you have to detangle as if you are natural.

I do co washes every day. Bi monthly protein treatments. Mothly clarifying. Wash n' gos most of the time, and I do twistouts here and there.

I do twistouts even though my hair is curly becaus it gives a different look. Twist out and wash and gos look very different.
