Okay y'all, I've been considering highlighting my hair for the longest. I finally went ahead and did the damn thang, kind of on a spur of the moment. Now I'm wondering, how do I take care of these things? Do I need to use certain shampoos and conditioners to make sure my color doesn't fade and to make sure that my hair doesn't break? Should I bun my hair more than usual to prevent extra breakage? Is surge safe to use on highlighted hair?

Y'all, help me out with suggestions.

TIA

How did they do the highlights? Did they use bleach? I would treat your hair just like color treated hair. Do more frequent protein treatments, keep up deep conditioning at least once a week. Definately keep your hair moisturized.

Hi, Keisha gurl-

Yes, now that you have highlights you wanna use poo and conditioner that cater to your new look. They wil help preserve your color and maintain moisture in the process.

If you want to go the high end professional route, I recommend:

Paul Mitchell's Color Conserve Conditioner

- Very moisturizing, leaves hair soft.

KeraCare Hydrating Poo

- This stuff is amazing! Leaves my hair feeling like silk and is gentle enough not to strip the color in your hair.

Redken, Aveda and Kenra all make good poos and conditioners.

If you wanna go the drugstore route:

Garnier Color or Damaged Poo and Conditioners

- I LOVE this brand. Very good.

Other brands like Dove and Cream of Nature have gotten good reviews on this site, but I've never used them so I can't vouch for them.

As far as styling, you don't have to become a granny just b/c you have color now.

Style as usual, but go easy on the heat ( you should be doing that anyway...)

Hope this helps.

Thank y'all! I just washed my hair with Motions shampoo, did the 2 minute Aphogee, and then used the Garnier moisturizing deep conditioner (which i love love love, btw). I'm definitely gonna try out the products that you recommended Dolce.

Keisha gurl,

I had highlights before, several times, and all I can recommend is that you condition a LOT. Try to leave your conditioner in for at least 30 minutes every time you wash. And oiling your hair will be very good too. You can either do hot oil treatments before shampooing or you can oil your hair in the morning for example (amla oil is very good for this, but you can use olive, coconut, etc). You take sections of hair and apply room temperature oil with your hands. Make sure every strand is really coated. When you did your whole hair you can put it in a bun and leave it like that all day long. Then at nighttime you wash your hair.

Where are those pics girl??? Let see em!

Good luck...condition....condition...condition...

I love having highlights and i know with my hair, i have to avoid using the blow dryer. The highlighted parts tend to be dryer then the rest of the hair and blow drying frequently will cause them to break. Also sleeping with a satin scarf helps my hightlighted parts tremendously.

Shampooing and conditioning with products made to protect the color is good because it wont stip the highlights u have.

I heard that oil strips the highlights from your hair.. strips the color.. so that's not true??

Triple your moisture. If you use an oil or serum treat the ends with them each evening before bed and in the morning. Deep condition often and keep heat off of your ends. Blow drying and curling/flat ironing will make them brittle. I used Salerm wheat germ often as well as the Paul Mitchell conditioner Dolce Dawn recommended.

Rushgirl,

that's news to me...I didn't know or have ever heard that oils can strip the color...how could that be possible? All I know is that the oil really worked for me. Maybe some other member know more about this.

y'all are the best, thank you for all of the suggestions. right now i'm planning on cutting out almost all direct heat, and doing weekly mild protein treatments. i'm also going to wait at least 3 or 4 weeks until my next relaxer touchup. i'm afraid that my hair will just melt when the chemicals touch it now.

so that will kinda give me a reason to stretch my relaxer.
