you don't have a lot of money to try a bunch of different products out? I've really fallen off the wagon with caring for my hair. I've gone back to my old ways before I started seeing any results /images/graemlins/frown.gif Can I just find some products that I KNOW are going to work and not have use up a lot of brain cells trying to figure it all out??? I want to take better care of my hair but, don't have a whole lot of time and more importantly $$$ to try different things...If you could narrow it down to a shampoo, conditioner, deep conditioner and a daily moisturizer/hairdress what would it be?

Absolutely. As a matter of fact the simpler the better sometimes. Here's what I recommend:

Wash every 5 days
1) Pre shampoo treatment with Olive Oil
2) Creme of Nature Detangling Shampoo (green/yellow bottle)
3) Elasta QP Intense Conditioner (Moisturizing)
4) Elasta Qp DPR-11 (good for deep conditioning)
5) ORS Hair Mayo (protein)
6) S-Curl No drip Curl Activator or Elasta QP Penetrating Moisturizer (moisturizers)
7) Elasta Qp Mango Butter or Profectiv Megagrowth Anti- breakage strengthening creme (sealing for moisturizers)
8) Elasta Qp H-Two Leave-in (selaing cuticles/detangling)

All of these products are under $20 and are very good.

Do the ORS protein at least 2x a month.
After wash and conditioner, spray hair with leave in and comb out. Next apply S-Curl or E-QP pen. Moist. , then seal in moisture with mango butter or profectiv. Fix into a ponytail and you're done.

If you're doing a rollerset or plan to wear the hair down, skip the S-curl.

We would need to know what your styling method would be. Are you going to rollerset, braid out, wear it up...maybe all three?
I mostly braid out and I find that a spritz of S-curl and coconut oil work great for me as a set.
I just tried the new Garnier Fructis line (shampoo for color-treated/permed hair and the conditioner for dry/damaged) and really liked it. it retails for about 3.99 but its on sale at CVS for 2.99 til saturday if you have one of their membership cards.
I'd recommend ORS hair mayo for a deep conditioner (some say africa's best line is just as good and cheaper) and definitely recommend you do a hot oil. Olive oil with a touch of honey is very economical and effective, i hear.
how many times a week do you want to wash?

HI Shinyblackhair,

My suggestions: (based on if you rollarset)

Pre Shampoo Treatment: Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Warm it up and then put it on the hair ends for as long as you can. I try for 1 hour if poss. Pin up the hair or tuck the ends in on themselves. Follow this with your shampoo/conditioner session.

Shampoo: Cream of Nature Detangling (yellow bottle green writing, it says its for dry brittle hair). This is VERY moisturizing and just works very well.

Conditioner: Motions Moisture Plus(my fav. low end conditioner, costs $3 or $4.99 and works like a gem). Le Kair Cholestrol (this works very nicely too and is around $5 or less). There are alot of raves on this board for Pantene Smooth and Sleek conditioner too.

Protein: I've heard good things about Hi Pro Pac. The good thing is it comes in sachets alot so you could just get a couple of them and use each one once a month to see what you think. Ricky's in Manhatten has alot of samples of normally mid to high end products. Always follow a protein conditioner with your moisturizing conditioner or the hair will come out dry. I love Aubrey Organics GPB which is the only protein c. that I"ve found that doesn't dry out the hair (costs approx $7).

Leave In: A cheap but effective trick is to mix your moisturizing conditioner with water and spritz that in your hair. Ratio I use is like 1 part conditioner to 7 parts water-ish. I did this with the Motions c. and the hair came out fabulous

If your near a Sallys, the New Image Damage Free Thermal Styling Conditioner (in red bottle) is a v. cheap but excellent protector from heat. Its .99 cents right now because its being discontinued.

For air dry days I would highly recommend getting s-curl 'no drip' activator. Spritz it all over after washing your hair then style as normal and go. For braid outs, the hair comes out noticeably softer and STAYS moisturized.

Some of the best products I've used that were under $5 are:

Shampoo: Jason Natural Sea Kelp, Salon Selectives Completely Drenched, Cream of Nature, Optimum Care Super Protecting.

Conditioner: Jason Natural Sea Kelp, Elasta QP DPR-11, St. Ives Intensive Conditioner, Summit Mend, Lady Velvet Instant Repair, Lustrasilk HPC, ORS Hair Mayonaaise, Hairlox Cholestrol.

Moisturizer: S-Curl Spray. Hands down!

Pomades/Oils: Proclaim Natural 7 Oil (from Sally's), African Royale Hot Six Oil, Kemi Oil Shea Butter Pomade, Elasta QP Mango Butter (worked for me for a while but not anymore--everyone else seems to love it, though), Kids Organics Soft Hold Styling Pomade and Hairdress, Kids Organics Shea Butter Daily Moisturizer, Kids Organics Protein & Vitamin Fortified Healthy Hair & Scalp Remedy.

I don't know much about your hair. But check these products out the next time you're in the beauty supply. Ingredients, texture, smell, etc.

Good luck!

I think Jason's is only at health food stores. But it's worth the trip! Cream of Nature, Optimum, Salon Selectives and St. Ives are at Kmart, Wal Mart etc.

For Shampoo: I would suggest Aphogee's Shampoo for Damaged Hair (it comes in a big size: 32 oz. for about $8). I use this personally, even though my hair is not damaged.

For Conditioner: I also use Motions Moisture Plus which is reasonable in price. Dark & Lovely Ultra Moisturizing cholestorol is also good and reasonable in price.

For Leave In: I use Infusium 23

here is my suggestion and i'm a hardcore airdryer:

shampoo: cream of nature

deep conditioner ( i always deep condition): St. Ives Fortifying Reconstructor

leave in: infusium mixed with some hollywood beauty carrot oil

oil for everyday: monoi oil

hot oil treatment: olive or vegetable with honey

For shampoo: Clairol Renewal 5x for dry/damaged hair and I agree with Creme of Nature(green/yellow bottle)

Conditioner: Suave Smoothing conditioner (to me it's cheaper than Pantene Smooth N Sleek)

Leave In: Good old distilled H2O mixed with conditioner and Hollywood Beauty Carrot Oil

Pre shampoo: Olive, safflower or sunflower oil, heated

Deep conditioning: Aussie 3 Minute Reconstructure, Queen Helene Cholesterol, a few drops of peppermint oil, olive oil, and rosemary oil.

Ends protection: Elasta QP Mango Butter or Protectiv Healthy Ends.

And if you're wearing your hair down, S-Curl all the way.

I've heard everyone rave about S Curl - can you put it on wet hair and dry, or just dry and do you put it only on the new growth or spray it on the whole hair and, finally, how much do you use? As I'm trying to develop my own regiment, I find that my hair seems rather "greasy"
ohwell.gif
. I'm sure I'm being to heavy with my applications. Thanks in advance.

I will recommend a basic conditioner for relaxed hair: Aussie Moist conditioner. I usually can get it for around $3 and when there is a sale it's usually buy 1 get one free at CVS or RIte Aid. It gives the hair amazing slip. My hair was always soft and detangled--100% of the time.

i was thinking this the other day, what i would do if i was really short of money, i still need to look good!

i think the core of what your hair needs is already at home. think of vegetable or even olive oil for hot oil treatments and leave-in treatments in the kitchen, plus eggs and mayonnaise for your deep condition already packed with moisture and protein. think of applying overnite instead of with a hood dryer if you cannot afford one at the moment. water comes from the tap and our hair loves it! as for shampoo, i could go weeks wihout one doing the no poo and i dont use much anyway, they can dry out. there are many ways of improvising. these steps even apply when you go to a remote place and you forget to bring along your hair products.

i hope i am never in this situation but this is what i would do if i had no choice!
