Can you say sealing your ends = retaining more

In your regimen do you find sealing a must? (using a water based then oil)
Have you seen growth from it?
I'm listening.

Taking care of the ends won't affect the the growth from your scalp, but it will help them stay healthy and not break off. I had given up on sealing my ends out of sheer laziness lol but I started back up when I deployed in July...my ends are doing MUCH better now.

I haven't been sealing, but I do moisturize my ends 3-4 timed a week ( maybe every other day). I don't seal because the moisturizer that I use keeps my hair moisturized for days. I've been wearing sew-ins/ eeaves, but when I reach my goal length, I'll see if I need to start sealing since my hair will be out.

I've been wondering if this does any good myself. Since I am prone to split ends, I think I'm going to make it apart of my regimen for awhile to see if it helps keep splits at bay.

Moisturizing and sealing my ends definitely helps with retention. It does reduce the breakage but it also reduces the extent of the SSKs and splits I have. Because I can reduce those, then when I don't have to trim as much. When I don't M&S I can have SSKs going up 2" to 3" up my hair strand.

YES!!! It is one of the most important parts of my regimen. Sealing with oils or butters helps my hair to retain moisture longer so it doesn't have to be moisturized as often. My hair stays soft and it is easy to manipulate when trying to style and doesn't tangle and knot as badly because each strand is lubricated. Plus, I always receive complements about how healthy and shiny my hair is now. Sealing with oils that benefit my hair has without a doubt helped me to retain length.

Definitely adding to my regimen. My ends were horrible causing me to have a major trim.

What are you guys using to seal with? I have natural oils like jojoba, castor and avocado and I also have some Optimum care split end reconstructor which is basically a silicone.

My ends are fragile and I seal daily. Sealing has stop breakage, add moisture and now I retain every inch of hair growth. I also don't have to trim as often.

^^^Same as above. I seal every other day. I was using old formula HE LTR and then an oil on top, but now I think I will break out the raw shea butter and whip up something b/c I hate the new formula. I will just use that as a regular leave in.... I also wear my twists in an updo most days of the week, and take my twists out more gently than I used to also.

I need to move to daily sealing, but in the last year, the breakage has decreased dramatically since I started sealing every other day.

What have you been using as a moisturizer?

I definitely noticed more retention. I seal my ends with a butter of some sort at night - every night in fact. I use oils to seal the length of my hair after I moisturize. It prevents knots, SSKs, split ends and general dryness.

Yes!!! My ends live being coated in oils! They are my new guilty pleasure. And I have seen a direct correlation between breakage and how often I seal. I prefer semi thick oils during the day. The oils also reduce friction and allow me to comb easier. Detangling is easier. Fewer SSK's. And shiny, more pliable hair. I will never stop oiling my hair

About 10 years ago my hair was armpit length, texturized and as healthy and long as it's ever been. I attributed that to "search and destroy" hair trims and every night sealing my ends with Nexxus Botanic Oil hair oil. My hair loved that stuff and then it went away. I see there is a new version under their Aloxxi line, I may check it out, but I'm loving olive oil right now.

Sealing with oil, butters, grease or silicone products (serums) is very helpful in retaining growth by keeping the moisture in.

It also provides lubrication to the strands so the hair doesn't tangle and break easily, and it provides shine.

I wouldn't have been able to retain any length without sealing my ends. I learned this lesson early on in my journey.

And my ends just laugh at those light oils. I can ONLY seal with the heavy stuff....shea butter or castor oil, and I'm pretty heavy-handed with the application too.

its bad but lately ive been sleeping in my puff (wrapped with a scarf)... do you think its possible to seal my ends like this? or would i have to go back to nightly twisting?

also is sealing in something like jojoba too light?

I don't sleep with a puff but have done the same with a twist out. I seal with something heavy like a butter or I may do a layer approach (water/moisture mist, followed by light oil like sunflower, followed by a heavy butter). Have had good results with layering. My ends don't curl together even when my hair is loose.

awesome thanks frizzy faithVA. ive just been so tired and i cant see myself twisting/braiding until i want a braid or twistout. i just cant lol.

awesome. ive been sorta throwing some oyin hair dew on it before i go to sleep, so i guess ill throw some oil on top. maybe ill mist with my water bottle before all that.

I think it really depends on how curly your hair is on how heavy something has to be to seal. I think the curlier the hair the heavier the sealer because it adds a layer between the strands so they don't knot or cause splits in other strands.

The more layers I do the happier my tightly curly hair is. But if I were to straighten it I could use something lighter like the jojoba or the sunflower oil alone.

What Faith said. :yep: I would, and do, moisturize and heavily seal when I wear a twistout. I'm talking melted shea butter and castor oil heavy (on wet hair). Also,I do this during the cold Winter months for protection.

While I don't seal, I do believe sealing and protective styling can improve your retention. I just don't do it because I'm lazy; and since I'm not in a hurry to have long hair, my less than perfect retention doesn't really make me lose sleep.

Wanakee is a good example of how this works. There's another member who also shared her progress after following Wanakee's direction but I can't think of her name so can't even link you to her YT progress images. :(

I'm wondering if you're referring to me. I've been using Wanakee products since 1995. After the ends are lubricated, it's good to keep them unseen (up and out of the air) as in a protective style.
