Can someone please explain to me what "bump" or "bumping" means?

I've seen the words "bump" and "bumping" in some of the threads for a long time now, but I still don't know what that means. Can someone please explain?

When no one has answered a thread or you want more replies, you "bump" the thread, that way it stays visable on the current thread list.
