ok ladies i"m in TN and wanted to get i think what is called box braids i wanted them the size of a pen. But ever shop i called keep talking about the indivual braids for 150 to 200 where they use like five stands of hair in each braid. should i be asking for something else or is this just there way off making money.

Maybe you could take a picture of the style you like to the shop. If they can do tiny micros then surely can do box braids.

And be in charge when you go. If they look like they are about to use use more extension hair per section of your own. LEAVE! Keep in mind that if they add too much hair it pull yours out, so err on the side of caution by making them use less than your own hair per section. I can get a full head of tiny box braids by using only one whole pack and an eighth of another. I always buy two packs of human hair extensions but I am yet to use all of that. And my hair does well and doesn't look sparse, IMO.

Hey, I'm in Memphis too! That is pretty much the standard price in this area, the only prices that are cheaper than that are usually not done in salons. Usually anything cheaper is done out of somebody's house. Now the 5 strand thing sounds suspect! IMO that's too much stress on such a small amount if hair..sounds like a recipe for damage. I would make sure that I would tell them that you want medium-sized (not too small). I am co-signing with ajacks and nonie..take a pic to show them..and if they don't do what you asked...leave ASAP!! It's your hair not theirs..they want the money!

I found that eveen when You ask to do them the size of a pen they still do it too small...around here, so thats why I learned to do it myself.

I have never had braids done in the US, so forgive the ignorance. Do stylists ask you to section out the hair for them? They did that in Kenya when I used to get my hair braided which would give you some power over how much hair is used per section.

But as Chameleonchick says, your best bet is to learn to do them yourself. No one can love your hair as much as you can.
