I am newly natural and I have not been using heat but its getting cold and I cannot wet my hair as much as I have been doing due to health concerns. Do you think it would be ok if I flat ironed no less than every 2 weeks for the winter months and then go back to using no heat in the Spring and not stunt my growth? I dont have to blow dry it because I dont have to have it bone straight because it will be in a bun. Are there any ladies that do this natural or not and have maintained the health of their hair?

I used to do this and I got pretty good growth. When I stopped doing it I got even more though. I think you should be ok with every 2 weeks but I wouldn't do it more than that. Have you ever thought of doing a roller set and silk wrap? You can have straight hair but you don't have to use direct heat. A braid-out is an option as well.

Poka I tried doing a rollerset but it was alot of work because my hair is so thick and it did not last but 2 days and it reverted back. A braid out does not look good on my hair at the length I am now but that may be an option for me next winter when my hair is longer.

hi lady,
What about braids, twist, weave, half wig, wig or other protective style since it's cold outside:look:

Hey Soun, These are the styles that I have been using to get me to this point since I BC and I am very tired of them especially the wigs. I need a change but I dont want to damage my hair. The regimen I had in mind for myself is that once I BC I would use no heat in the Spring and Summer and use minimal heat in the colder months but I wanted to know if there were any other ladies that does this with success or did it lead to damage.

Thanks sweetheart, I cant wait until my hair gets as long yours. This in between stage has really been trying for me but you ladies with all of that long and beautiful natural hair keeps me going.

Ok, I see. I think you will still get good growth with that regimen though. Just use a heat protectant and make sure to keep up with your protein treatments and dc's. I did good flat ironing every two weeks and keeping the manipulation low in-between so I think you will be ok.

I've been getting my hair flat ironed every 2 weeks for the past 2 months (courtesy of Balisi) and it has not affected the growth. She dc's it at every appointment as well as uses a heat protectant. I don't use any heat in between so I maintain my style by pincurling my hair. If you plan on bunning it in between then I think your hair will be fine.
