Well, can they? I already have a "five-head" as they say and I don't want to be 25 with a "seven-head" as a result of practicing this protective style. It seems like there's a lot of pulling. And what about breakage? Thanks.

LOL @ 'seven head'

IMO I think buns / ponytails can case a receeding hairline if they are pulled too tight. This also applies to braids.

Yes, they can. My hairline is so sensitive. I used to wear my hair up eveyday (mind you, I pulled it reaaal tight), and I suffered from thinning hair and breakage constantly ( epecially my sides and a patch in the back center of my head). The only way I will ever wear my hair up again is when it grows out long enough to wear it loosely.

Ditto to what's already been said. They can definitely cause receding hairlines and breakage if they are pulled to tight.

I just try to vary my protective styles between buns (NOT pulled to tight) and loose pin ups.

I dont think putting your hair in a bun can CAUSE receeding hairline but it could contribute to your hairline looking thin maybe (FOR SOME PEOPLE
