Hi Koeanblaq
wave.gif

I am also new to this board.
I wear a pin up as a protective style, but I have heard several ladies on here talk very highly of the baggie technique with vaseline.
It's suppose to be excellent for keeping your ends moisturized.
Here's some links that you may want to look at:

Welcome Koreanblaq!
wave.gif

I'm on the bun challenge and I wear mine differently every couple of days or so (like a side bun or French Twist). This way, I'm not putting any stress on one area all of the time. My ends are always moisturized - I do it at least twice each day by wetting them with my glycerin/distilled water mixture then sealing the ends with vaseline. So my buns cannot dry my ends.

By the way, how has wearing a bun for 4 years helped your hair? Did you retain a lot more length this way?

You may be thinking of another Isis on this board, Isis448 (I think). I've only been here since July of this year.

You're welcome about the bun help. I don't have any pics yet. The model below is wearing a side style that looks like my side bun. I use a silk scrunchie. I prefer wearing it off to the side rather than just in the back of my head. Sometimes, I'll have a long tendril hanging loose on the same side or the other, for a sexy effect (my hair is about 3-4 inches below my shoulders).

My French Twist is held up with Good Hair Day pins - no stress on the hair whatsoever!

The question - Can wearing a bun still cause dry ends? I have worn my hair in a bun consistently for the last 4 years or so (I'm a college student), however I suffer from chronically dry ends. It just occured me that this could be due to the fact that I use a band to secure my bun, and pull the hair *almost* all the way thru the band. That means that about 1/2 inch of hair is kinda scrunched up under the "bun" part. Could the constant stress on this part of the hair be causing my dry ends? I will admit I wasn't the greatest at keeping them moisturized, but I wonder will that really help if I am overtaxing the hair at this particular point. Does anyone have a bun method that doesn't cause dry ends? My hair is super thick and just past shoulder length.

The intro, for those who have time to read it -

Hi all. I am a newbie here, but an old pro to the black hair game - I used to post on BlackHairSuperGrowOut, naturallycurly, and BHC as Dymepiece3 and variations thereof.

My new year's resolution is to get back on top of things with my hair. I have gotten frustrated lately, as graduation soon approachs and I can't go out in the 'real world' wearing a sloppy half wet bun like I've done the past 4 years. I've taken to getting my hair straightened whenever I am in a place where I know a stylist (LA or NYC, basically). My hair is, I guess, 3b/3c/4a. I am not sure about these typing systems tho. I would like to get to the point where I am happy wearing my hair natural or straightened. My hair is not relaxed. Please holla (AIM, Koreanblaq) if you remember me from days of old or just want to chat, I'm working on getting a photo album up. for now, please visit:

Happy Holidays!

hey hey!!

My take: you look soooo pretty with twists. I find that twists put into a bun offers more protection and retains more moisture than a regular bun. You don't have to worry about getting them all perfect if you're going to just put them up, and you don't have to take them down to wash your hair. I can do a set to get you going.

Also, remember to keep those ends shea'ed up, and don't forget about deep conditioning - both moisturizing and protein.

Love,
Cherish

I used to where my hair in regular buns but I noticed they dried my hair out to much. Now what I do is put vasiline on the ends, profective breakfree(a little bit) through my hair. I then put my hair up as if I was doing a bun, but instead I bread my hair then tuck it under. When I take my hair down it's nice and soft and looks good enough to wear down if I want.
by the way, Koreanblaq, you are a very, very, pretty girl.

koreanblaq, you're very pretty!

I seal moisture into my damp hair with vaseline (don't be stingy), and then I braid my length hair. I coil the braid into a bun against my head with the ends tucked under toward the center of the bun. I pin it down with one Good Hair Days pin. No elastic bands, no dryness.

Hi koreanblaq. I remember you as dymepiece. I was Swttng over at BHSGO. I wasn't too invloved with BHC though. Welcome to LHCF! You'll love it here.

Hi, Koreanblaq
wave.gif
. Thanks for sharing your pics!

About buns causing dry ends...only if the ends are exposed to the air. I use a foam donut secure my buns, and I tuck my ends completely under the donut, but your hair may be too thick for a 'commerical' donut (from Sally beauty supply). You may want to do a search for "donut" or "sock".

OMG!!! muy bonita!! it's so nice to see you here, and nice to finally put a name with a face! you are so pretty!!

it's been a while. remember our long chats back in the day?

you should try the Vaseline on your ends. it's been working wonders for me!

Yep. Leejure used to wear her hair like this and it caused breakage. I use a silk scrunci on my hair. I first slather vaseline on the ends of my hair, twist my hair around in a bun, tuck the ends under my hair and put a silk scrunci around the bun.

Good luck on babying those ends

Denali - Thanks for your help. What is a pin up? That sounds intriguing. I have heard of the vaseline/baggie thing before, however, I don't think it's for me.

I would love to know how you do your pin up, ESP if you have a pic or can point me to a pic somewhere on the web.

Sorry for the late reply!
A pin-up is simply that, I twist the length length of my hair up on my head and use a barbie pin to secure it.
With this style my hair doesn't rub against my clothes, and i never comb it.
I can PM you a pic if you like.

The model below has very long hair and the closeup on the website shows her hair in several twists that are pinned up on the side. Very protective.

You and your hair are very pretty.

Re your bun issues, another poster, Leejure posted recently about doing her braids the same way (a little hair still stuck in the ponytail), which causes major breakage for her. Check out this thread: Proper Bun and you may want to do a search under her name for other stuff.

Oh yeah... welcome to LHCF.
