Hey yall I'm getting desperate...
I have like 3 inches of new growth and this 1" Con Air flat iron just ain't getting it for me anymore...I thought maybe I was doing something wrong considering this is the longest I've ever been without a relaxer...But my bff used her $120 tourmaline flat iron on my hair last night and got my hair looking like I got a good Dominican blowout. I want this look every time, but I don't want to have to rely on others to do my hair all the time. So can anyone recommend a good flat iron that won't cost more than my phone bill?

cortex from tj maxx/marshalls/ebay, amika flat irons ebay/amazon, herstyler amica clubwear (they have a 3 piece set, flat iron, mini flat iron, and clampless curling iron for 90$ with a 35% off code, comes out to about 60 or something like that). I have the herstyler. its great and i love it!

What have you heard about the Amika iron? I think I've heard of this brand and I'd rather go with a brand I've heard mentioned on here.

I second the Amika recommendation. I like it better than my FHI platform. Khandi just flat ironed her hair with it and had very good results.

i have a jilbere that i got from sally's for like $70... i swear its from heaven. i love it

eta:might be less than $70. it was a yr ago and i forget now ^_^

Im in love with the cheap Andis you can find at walmart with heat settings from 0-20 the thickest coarsest hair out there wont need more than 12-14 on the dial.

I have a gold plated Ceramic tools by Jibere de paris. I think its really good. My sis bought it for me one christmas from sally's I think its around $50. I plan to get a more expensive one one day maybe chi..just want to see whats the big deal!! :)

With the HSN special going on till the end of the yr. You can get the MaxiGlide, MiniGlide and all the products that go with it including serum and airdrying creme all for under $80 they're now offering a $20 off coupon I'd say thats the best value out there right now....

I have an Andis Ceramic from Walmart its less than $20. It works well. I dont put mine past 1..and I still have to turn it off and on when I flat Iron, I dont want to burn my hair. I used on my dd who is au natural when I flat iron her hair occaisionally.

i 3rd the Andis and I use it on maximum:spinning: not bad for a cheapie flatiron and I have had mine over a year (approaching 2).

hmmmm, maxiglide sounds goooooood:spinning: *walks out chanting, I MUST NOT... must not, must not*

The cortex and amika are supposed to be 100% ceramic.
You can find the cortex on sale for $29.99 at T.J. Maxx.

You can read about the amika/cortex brand in this thread.

I started my ceramic iron journey with the Jilbere. Results weren't too bad for a cheapie iron. It was around $35-$40 back then.

The Andis flat iron rocks! I don't need to put this iron on the highest temp. My hair gets awesomely strait and I can make great curls with it.:yep: I've tried a sedu and solia and my hair hated them both. The maxi glide is too clunky for me to handle. I haven't learned how to master the use of it, yet. I can't see myself buying another flat iron, even though the PJ monster whispers FHI in my ear.

Came back to say I see that my current iron is on sale for $79.99:

Thanks for your advice/suggestions everyone!
I did some research (basically just reading reviews on folica.com) and decided the solia might really work for me! To everyone who mentioned/recommended the solia I'm especially gratefully. I'm looking forward to ordering it soon! Thanks again ladies!!!

I have a Solia, as well as the Maxiglide and FHI Runway, and I am sure that you will enjoy the Solia.

I keep my Solia at work.
