They told me it couldnt be done.

But all I wanted was healthy hair. I was tired of relaxing my hair, for it to break off only to re-grow, be permed & break off even further. So after 12 months contemplation and hesitation, I decided to go natural, cold turkey. No transitioning for me.

"Are you crazy?"

"Why would u do something like that?"

"You'll look ugly with short hair."

"You cant get a job with that kinda hair"

And the best one of all...from my mother " What are you gonna do with that your nappy hair? Ugh."

But u know what? I didn't listen. And I'm so glad I didnt. Because now 2 years later, my hair is longer, stronger and healthier than it's EVER been!

And now they whisper:

"Wow your hair's so beautiful"

"Pretty!"

"Is that ur hair, or a wig?"

"I wish I had good hair like you!" *frown -- no such thing as "good hair"!

And of course my mother...who cut her hair short the same week I did...and now has a hot broken off mess of hair 2-3 inches..." What are you gonna do with that your nappy hair? Ugh.". Some people just don't get it.

This thread is dedicated to all them natural sisters esp. those that didn't have long hair as a child...esp. those with 4a/b hair whom think it doesnt grow as fast or as long as other hair types....YES, it does and I am a living testament. Because come Dec 2005, I WILL be Bra-strap *or very very close to!*

Check out my pics! I hope to inspire someone in the way that I was inspired, and I encourage all those on their natural journey to stay strong and be patient! Grow hair, grow!

Thank you ladies for all the love!

For those of you who asked, here is my regime:

1. Wash 1x/week with Creme of Nature Ultra Moisturizing shampoo ... this has no ammonium sulfate or sodium lauryl sulfate etc..which are very harsh on hair (natural or permed).

2. Condition rinse on wash days with Daily Defense Tender Apple ... it has amazing slip, and lets my W i D e tooth comb glide through my naps! Very cheap too so I always stock up cuz u KNOW how stores love to discontinue good products!

3. Deep condition with Lekair Cholesterol w Aloe Vera every wash day... I LOVE Lekair and have been using it for ages..very rich, very creamy. I dont use any protein treatments -- makes my hair hard & crunchy.

4. Daily spritz with conditioner + water mix

5. Moisturize/seal ends of my hair with HOLLYWOOD BEAUTY CASTOR OIL COMPLEX w MINK OIL! I LOVE this stuff! It has NO petroleum, but is the right consistency and thickness to seal moisture in! I use it right after I wash my hair and 80% rinse out the DDTA conditioner...I pinch generous globs and rub it into my hair section by section...then I brush through my hair to make sure it's evenly distributed. After using this stuff my hair stays soft for DAYS...it gives me the wickeded twists...and I cant wait to try a twistout with this stuff!

As u can see, my routine is very very simple because I believe in Lo maintenance & bcuz I'm lazy lol. It's worked for me thus far, and if it aint broke, why fix it? PS I dont take any vitamins (havnt in over 1.5 years), but I do intend to re-start some this year...prolly some biotin, MSM, vit B comp, EPO & Flaxseed Oil.

Take Care!

RE: tangles

It came to a point where I realized that I could no longer wash my hair loose. Period. I was just getting waaaaaaaay too much tangles, taking waaaaaaay too long to wash and u know what? it was getting ridiculous. So finally my Aunt (whose daughter is natural) mentioned to that me perhaps I should wash my hair in sections --> and so I did and boy was it a life saver!

Another thing I did that cut down on tangles -- I rarely wear my hair "out" or unmanipulated. When I used to do fros and puffs my hair used to be so tangled and intertwined after just 1 or 2 days. So i stopped wearing these out styles and started primarily wearing my hair in twists. Not only do i get less tangles, but come wash day it's easier to wash my "stretched" untwisted hair as opposed to washing a 2 week old puff!

RE: knots

I think this is just a part of the tangles. in my opinion the more I manipulate my hair in protective styles, the easier it is to comb out, the few tangles, the fewer knots. At this length just leaving it alone, or doing a washing-n-go is a definite no-no. I have to do "something" with my hair or it just gets out of control. Thats why i love rocking twists!

Your hair is beautiful. Ya'll naturals are making me re-think my permie ways. Even when I was natural I never knew natural hair could be so pretty. I'm really getting tempted to transition again.

Girl, I'm wit' ya!! As a child, I had chin length hair, so I have no nostalgic memories of good ole days when my hair was longer.

I can't believe that as I am pushing 50, my hair is the longest it has ever been. With proper care, black hair does grow. For me, proper care meant giving up relaxers and learning to work with my natural texture instead of fighting it.
