UUUUHGGH. SO, i co-washed every day for nearly 2 weeks in jamaica...everythings kool. I get back to england, i clarify for good measure and use salerm...everythings kool...i use keracare the following week...WHAT...Breakage? HUHHHH (my hair DONT break for nobody!) so u kno i was worried. I thought it was protein i needed....i co-washed with MNT....cool..no breakage...then, BUILDUP and lots of it...i guess that shea butter cholesterol built up on my hair bad (which it does AND DID a few yrs back) the salerm probabley just sat on that too and also built (salerm 21 is pretty potent) then my keracare ontop..OH LARD!

so i had to clarify AGAIN today, after shampoo-ing twice with a tacky feeling, my poor scalp had been on fire for 5 days.
I have really battered my hair this week, but thankfully i can see growth and no harm done, i even cut out every split i have in my head (took me 3 days!) SO I FEEL GOOD NOW.

  • the lesson is....if co- washing aint for u in the 1st place..dont even bother!
  • stick to your staples!
  • clarifying will SAVE YOUR HAIR!

I'VE THROWN OUT that shea butter cholesterol now, MNT can kiss my butter and hide itself till emergencies, cuz that gave my scalp serious illnesses and i'm off to kiss every bottle of Keracare i have!

It may have been the silicones in the NMT that cause extreme buildup on your hair. This in turn, almost creates a shield to prevent moisture from getting in the hair shaft. NMT has a heavy cone that requires a sulfate cleanser to remove. Since you used it for about a week, you really needed a good scrubbing! Sorry that happened, I'm a firm believer in if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Yep what she said. cholesterol was probably too heavy for cwing. I use cheap, cone-free vo5 condish. And I still clarify once monthly. Glad you solved the problem.

Tips For Effective Conditioner Washing

hi ladies,
ive been browsing the forums and noticed a few of us are having bad luck w conditioner washing/no pooing. in order to gain the greastest results from this, you have to understand the do's and dont's of the routine. not every conditioner is compatible for cw's. there are alot of ingredients you have to know to avoid in order to gain full benefit. i will try to give a basic overview of what to avoid in products/conditioners to gain better results.

anything ending in -cone or -xane or beginning with cyclo cannot be used for effective cw's. check your products and conditioners for these b/c they coat/build up the hair shaft and cannot be removed by conditioner alone.
Ex: if you no poo w ddta, you havent conditioner washed. you've coated your hair w 2 silicones and defeated the purpose. if you used cantu shea butter leave in, youve coated your hair w a very harsh cone and conditioner washing will not clease your hair. you will need shampoo.

check for these ingredients. if you see them you know its a bad choice for no pooing. always read the ingredients before you buy anything for your hair! suave naturals, most V05's, and health food store conditoners are great cw choices. pantene, all suaves other than the naturals line, aussie, herbal essences etc. are bad choices for no poo.

conditioner alone will not remove the residue from heavy product. if you've used heavy oils/butters/styling products, conditioner will not cleanse your hair. keep product use to a minimum or opt for leave in conditoners in order to make cw effective.

acv neither clarifies nor removes silicone build up. thats a huge misconception. acv restores the hairs natural ph balance, so it gives the illusion of squeaky clean hair. if you dont follow the "curly girl" routine, it cannot clarify your hair alone. you will still have to use shampoo to clarify, then follow w acv. if you follow the routine, acv can remove build up from conditoners.

if you're going to try the no poo routine, read the book "curly girl" by lorraine massey. she created the routine and this book outlines it. cw/nopooing gets a bad rap here, but i think the main reason is not many of us do it correctly. there is a method to this...you just dont pick up conditioner and then say "it doesnt work!" you have to understand the routine then decide if its for you. im no expert or anything, but ve gotten great results b/c i read up on the routine.

hth anyone having no poo woes!

Thanks for the info. I was starting to get worried because I was thinking about cowashing in the summer mos. I was thinking about humectress (though it is cone less)to start off with, but now I am thinking of Suave milk n honey.

Though, I am no expert on cowashing, I would think that you must shampoo every now and then right:confused:

For my hair, I have to shampoo, whether I cowash or not.

I think strictly co-washing and no-pooing works best for those who use no other products whatsoever in their hair and for someone who is very consistent with their hair routine. See, I'm never consistent with my hair routine. I like doing different styles in which I use different products for those styles. ;)

HTH!

thanks for that info POOH!!

i think i know of a conditioner that is cheap and has no cones..i'm gonna double check tomorrow :D

Interesting information!! Thanks!

I might have to pick up some Salerm. I hear great things about Salerm and Giovanni. Side note: Candy_C kudos on your progress! Your hair looks good girl! Me personally I like shampoo twice a week if I am CW'ing frequently.

Thanks poohbear! :D That was very helpful. So helpful that it should probably be its own thread!

I couldn't have said it better myself, however, there are water soluable cones as well. Any cone prefixed with PEG or PPG and a number is considered water soluable. The higher the number, the higher the solubility. Also, dimethicone colpolyol is a water soluable silicone as well. Additionally, Dimethicone, and amodimethicone are easier to remove than 'cyclomethicones' or 'trimethicones' and can be removed with a gentler surfactant (poo) like coco-betaine. The later two must be removed with a sulfate poo. All that said, the most effective CW conditioners are VO5 and Suave. They're inexpensive and are great for daily use. HTH as well!

thanks for the info! maybe that's why my ends are still breaking even though i have tried everything under the sun(buildup). is it harmful to clarify every week or every other week?
