I had a MAJOR setback, the back of my hair is now neck length from breakage!!!! Thank goodness the top of my hair is long enough to cover it. I wash and deep condition weekly, I moisturize and seal daily, I'm using my JBCO and I wear my protective style(BUN)...I dont know what's going..I know my hair is growing because I cut a bang above my eyebrows in December and its now under my eyes.. Can someone please tell me whats going on.

Maybe the back broke off because of your bun? What type of scarves are you wearing? What type of coat do you wear? Anything abrasive can cause the back of your hair to experience friction and break off.

Are you changing the position of your bun? I have bad breakage from wearing mine in the same spot for too long. Also is your bun too tight?

I wear a satin scalf, I wear either a Leather Coat or the Monclair...I think it's the bun.. Do I need to cut my hair all one length or will it eventually grow out?

Nope..I wear it in the same position...it wasnt tight.......I'm so mad. All this hard work for nothing.

Are you getting your relaxers done at a salon? This was a major problem when I went to a certain lady for my relaxers in the past. She would fail to properly wash out all of the relaxer and my hair stayed chewed off back there really bad. We were friends but I finally had to leave her.

Yes I do...she has been doing my hair for a few months now..I've never done my own relaxers before...I think i would be to nervous.

You do not have to cut your hair all one length UNLESS you want to.

The nape of my hair broke off when I reached my goal of APL...so I just continued to trim the length each month until the nape caught up. Now my hair is basically all one length. I think I still see about an inch of difference. I wear it unrolled/curly from rollers and that helped hide the length difference. No one knew but me and DH.

If you are not going to change the person that does your relaxers...you may continue to see breakage.

My breakage was caused by an OLD relaxer that I applied. A lesson learned. Now i make sure and check the expiration date on all my products. I always neutralize the back FIRST now and I do so several times, even letting it sit for the final rinse. I hope this helps.

You do however, want to trim the broken area an even length. So that it will grow out evenly. I did this for myself and I'm happy with my results.

I totally agree with this. Since she's only been doing your relaxers a few months, you should bring it to her attention. She's is not properly washing all of the relaxer out. That way she can give you some sort of treatments at no charge. Believe it or not, this is a common problem for salon goers.
Edited to say that you don't have to do your own relaxers, just find someone new.

I have had severe nape damage a couple of times. Once from relaxer damage and once from wearing the same hairstyle repeatedly. Once I had a stylist shave the back of my head altogether and another time I just trimmed a little at a time. The ladies here have given you great advice. Make sure you change the position of that bun! It's up to you but I would not cut the hair. I would trim bit by bit. I'm glad you are attentive to your hair. It will grow back in no time:yep:.

Protective type styles like that break my hair off. Buns and clips in the same spot reak havoc. I think wearing hair loose and free is much more "protective" than binding hair down

BKfinest - I bun a lot. I change the position of my buns and vary up my protective styles (use claw clips instead of bunning) here and there to give my hair a break. My nape is weak anyway because it's always been the trouble area. I ensure I keep that area nice and moisturized and use cut up stockings to make pony with. Check out my blog for more on how I bun. I say let it grow out, don't cut all to be even the length.

Indeed, I'd like to be able to bun a lot more than I do but I just know that given my weak areas in the back of my hair that won't help none. That's why I have to mix up bunning and wearing my hair down, it doesn't seem to be hurting me.

I'm not sure if the perm was old, or my bun is causing it,,,it's just frustrating.....I really do not want to cut my hair...I just feel like all my hard work is going down the drain. I will do like you said trim and continue...Thank you

Thank you, I will be making a few changes since I'm not sure exactly what is causing this

You can also bun with goody spin pins instead of using pony maker. I have had good look with using the cut up stockings as I think I mentioned already. Main thing is, change the bun position.
