I've been wearing my hair in a bun (for which it must be in a ponytail first) for over two years and the only breakage I got was from being careless with my brush. Once I started brushing the canopy properly, I didn't experience any breakage.
Make sure your hair is moisturized (if not slightly moist) at all time even if it means you have to dunk your scrunchie in a hair oil to give it some slip of it's own.
Pass up skinny scrunchies for larger ones. Make sure you're not using the kind with metal on one side. For the least amount of breakage, use ones with a lot of fabric and never pull them too tight around your hair. Twice aruond should be plenty.
When I dry my hair in the ponytail method, I take it around three times and when I think it's over half way dry, I loosen it to two times around.
I wore a ponytail enclosed with a rubberband daily. Right around the crown of my head, I had breakage that measured 1 inch long when the rest of my hair was 12-13 inches. I never knew what caused it and just accepted it. Fast forward 5 years and now I know it probably was: A- The rubber band; B - the ponytail was positioned too high on my head and C - I slept with the rubber band still on my hair at night and slept on my back.
i always make sure i wear the no damage hair bands and not to make the pony tail too tight. not only can this break your hair off but your hairline can receed too.
Like everyone else said, I only experienced breakage when I pulled the ponytail too tight and used the wrong elastic. I stopped pulling so tight and I started using the no damage elastics (the ones that don't have a metal band or that glued spot to snag hair). I just had to sacrifice some of the sleekness of my buns for the sake of my hair's health.
I have been doing the CO Washes for about a month and I haven't experienced any breakage. But I know someone who has, so I was wondering if anyone on the board has had this problem. Thanks for all of your comments.

I got some breakage in my front hair and receeding upper temples from wearing this style daily although I tried not to wear it too tight. I resorted to bangs bc it´s one of my fav hairstyles!
I have some breakage at the top of my head too. I don't have satin/silk srunchies, just cotton. I believe most of my breakage was caused by wearing them to bed, even though they weren't that tight (this was over a period of a few years). I try to braid it at night and be sure to tie with a scarf. It will be a few years before I get that hair completely caught up with the rest
