Braids???

I have had braids for more than 8 months and had good growth. Right now I'm on my 16th month. At 14 months, I got to see my progress and was as pleased as Punch.

From this in Feb 2007, I got my braids in April 2007. Then after 14 months, I undid one section and pressed it for an unrelated project (not to see growth) but just happened to take notice and I was here in June 2008.

I do want to caution you though, unless you're doing the braids yourself and therefore redoing them as they need it, and doing them firmly but not too tight that you pull your hair out, and ensuring you use less hair per section than the thickness of the section, then don't try it. I am only able to do this coz I do the braids myself, so no single one ever stays braided long enough to mat. While I say I have had them in for 16 months, I'm frequently redoing a few braids at a time as I feel new growth, so that I take the strain off the previous "exhausted" starting point and move the extension to the new, unstressed new growth.

ETA: Also you must make sure you braid past your hair. I always braid to the ends of the extensions. New human hair unravels though so that's why they look open at the ends but otherwise I always braid to the ends.

I have had braids back to back since the end of novemeber(except one week in april when I let my hair down). Given that your actual hair is not neglected while the braids are in hair will continue to grow well while in braids, no matter the time period. I love 'em!!!. I know this is probably implied but I'm going to say it anyway. i would never keep the same set of braid in my hair for longer than a month without getting them done over, or the edges (or those braids that start to twist up at the base) being redone.

I am in a C&G braid challenge since May '08. I am wondering if I will see the same wonderful progress using only cornrows instead of box braids?? I take down the cornrows and redo them ever two weeks, with washing & DC'ing the hair in between. Do you think hair grows faster with the box braids instead of cornrows??

I have a question. How do you re-do the edges of the braids and how much does it cost you?

Oh I'm sorry I wasn't clear. I braid my own hair. So when the edges get loose from new growth, I just undo the entire extension braid with fingers while watching TV and then restart it afresh at the new base. It doesn't cost me a thing because I do it myself.

ahh if i could do this myself i would definitly consider getting braids.... right now im trying to figure out what style i want for my hair that can last me the next four months. im going abroad to spain and am in the middle of transitioning. i would like to find a style that wouldnt havent me worrying about my hair every minute. im considering getting a net weave sew in... n was told that can stay in for four months. but if thats the case, how is it going to look during that fourth month?! does anyone know.

and if i were to get braids. what kind of braids do you normally get?? what are the healthiest braids? cuz i definitly do not want anything too small. id honestly feel that would break my hair. let me know.

thanks in advance!

You will always have good growth with braids. Retaining lenghs when you take off those braids is the challenge.

Sweetsuccess, I always get human hair individuals. Doesn't mean they are the best or healthiest; they work for me because they're many enough to cover my scalp so there aren't huge gaps, and also small enough to look smooth when curled and one unit, instead of separate distinct parted plaits. Also I'm very careful about how much hair I put per section. In all, I used 1 and 1/8 packs of hair for my whole head--and I do have a big head!

But I do want to stress that if you aren't doing them yourself, or most importantly, if this is your first time, you're better off and safer if you follow the directions on www.growafrohairlong.com

i am braiding back up this oct for the winter until next june i put them in my self. save me some money the braids have help me wilth growth i do the G&G when i wash

I have been in braids for the past 2 1/2 years on and off with good growth retention, I agree totally with Nonie. Its better if you could do them yourself and they need to be cared for as your own hair.
