braids ghetto? what?

I use to be a former braid queen, wore them all the time. A lot of my female friends do not wear braids and do not hide the fact that they think they are ghetto. We are seniors in college, and yesterday I mentioned I wanted to get braids. They said as a grown woman who is about to go job hunting braids would take away from me. They said that braids does not had to the image of having class and being sophisticated. One of my friend went as far as to say it is too homegirl. They are all for getting a sew-in as long as it's done properly with the right hair and right color, but no braids. What are your thoughts? should I not get braids because I'm about to interview?

p.s.- These girls mainly come from upper class black families and according to them this is just a rule of thumb, not from a upper class family myself is this true?

It's not true to me. Nicely done, neat braids are perfect for any setting and can be dressed up for any occassion.

SOME styles are ghetto, but I'm sure that you're not thinking about getting one of those styles. :)

People close to me say that, also. I feel that you should wear your hair in whatever manner that makes you happy. It's your head and no one else's!

Overall I don't think they're ghetto.

What makes them ghetto is if

1. You keep them in waaay too long

and/or

2. You get them in a color that doesn't match or complement your hair and/ or complement your skin tone.

I don't think braids are ghetto. I have braids right now and have gotten a lot of compliments from co-workers and stangers on the street. I think you should wear your hair whatever way you want to.

I don't think they are personally ghetto, but have been given the name because most pple today have turned to braids as a pocket saver, meaning you find children w/braids forever in a life time, never taking them down for 3month or more w/o having them properly cared for while they are in. You will find plenty of teenagers and adults for that matter too, I think pple like that gave braids a bad name. Personally I don't like to wear anything added to my hair, but if that's what you want then go for it, but what's wrong w/your hair that you don't want to just style your own?

Depends on the look--as with any other hairstyle. There are plenty of non-braided styles that are often referred to as "ghetto". WTM? :look: I prefer to ask myself if the style is appropriate or not.

I think it depends on what you get. I am not for the cornrows going every which of way! Now, I have seen braids that looked very professional on professional black women!

I dont think braids are ghetto...but i think that some people when going into the corporate world look at you differently for wearing braids...i cant remember who told me this or where i heard it at but i remember someone saying that if you want to get braids/cornrows(guys and females) that you should wait until after you get the job and get hired and then start wearing them..i think they are ghetto when braids are worn too long and in different colors...i sometimes tend to think i wont be hired for a job sometimes because i have braids in my hair(but i wont take them down because of the fact that i may have just gotten them done)...on the last job interview that i went to surprisingly my supervisor ended up being Black and having braids down to her butt...so i didnt feel too bad with wearing my braids or cornrows..i think corporate america isnt ready yet to accept the braids/locs/cornrows and dont see them as being professional...

Interview Rule # 1 - When in doubt make the conservative choice. Do straight hair/weave/wig/whatever for the interview and wear braids once you get the job.

Personally, I would not get the braids until I get the job. I work for Corporate America as they say and they frown on the braids and might not consider you although you would never know why. I wore braid and I was told that I was too ethnic for the department that I was in. There are lots of cases where you can have braids and still get the job but I wouldn't take the chance when I am just starting out. I been with my company for over 8 years I have yet to see anyone that stood out as far as dreds or braids or things that are not the "norm" get hired. There's always a first every where. Your confidence has to be high too. My son has a job at BET and he went with braids and a tongue pierce but he took the ring out the tongue but they hired him, he was overly confident but then it was BET

oh please...braids are ghetto? that is really bogus...what a horrid statement...like the ladies have said..they are what u make them..ya keep them in until they are locking into ur own hair...a yeah, thats ghetto..but for the most part..i dont think so..
i think u should do what u feel..Oprah wears braids all the time, Tyra banks, the editor of essence magazine keeps cornrows in her head, i dont think these women are looked at as being ghetto..its just a style..

I'm going to have to agree with your friends on this one. Yes, if a man is applying for a job with braids, that does look ghetto. Even looking at some of the NBA basketball players with braids in their hair, and tatoos all over the place, does look ghetto. Although, I feel that men look more ghetto than women with braids. I think there is a time and place for braids. If I am invited to a ballroom dance, prom, or some place elegant, I will not wear braids. If I was in school or college, I would wear braids but I would think twice about wearing them to a professional job.

I use to wear braids quite a bit back in the days..Now, I'm not in to fake hair in general. Even though is looks good on women, it's not for me.

It all depends how you are getting them down...Personally if I didn't mind taking them done I would get micro-mini braids that match my natural hair color and do french twists or buns or whatever professional style that would normally be done on straight hair, but like anything else, your own hair, sewn-in, hair pieces, whatever all can be styled ghetto. It's all about presentation therefore it's how you present yourself and that's the overall package from attitude, clothers, hair and walk and all this can come off professional or ghetto.

I dont think that braids are ghetto either, as long as they complement your hair, your skin tone, and are neatly done. I'd suggest looking at a few braid magazines to get a few ideas on different braided hairstyles that can look very professional.

i used to think that only hoochie mamas wore braids and weaves....but I don't anymore. Its just a protective style and most employers are not going to care about it. As you long as you don't walk up in there with a purple mohawk and your initials shaved in at the back, you shouldnt't have a problem.

As a lover of braids...maybe I'm being slightly biased when I say they are not ghetto! I've been on job interviews with braids and got the job...maybe it was the way I presented myself (the braids were neat, 1 color and fresh). It all depends on how one takes care of them, if they are like 4 months old...then that's ghetto! But I would say the same thing for a jacked-up weave too...it's all about the presentation. Braids will never go out of style because they are cost effective, are not high maintenance (some can be), are healthy (some can be unhealthy) and most importantly they are beautiful!:)

It all depends on how you wear them. Period. Now on the other hand if a job wont hire you because youre wearing braids... who needs them? Ive heard people say braids are unprofesisonal but they also believe that weave and afros are unprofessional. Its all in how you wear it. Oprahs weave is very professional looking all the while Puff Daddys mamas weave is very UNPROFESSIONAL. Its all in how you wear it. Same thing goes for clothing, make-up, etc.

i have never heard of braids being ghetto. where have i been?

i personally don't think braids on a whole is ghetto. being "ghetto" is more of a mentality not so much a fashion statement. with that, if someone were to show up for an interview not looking their best whether their clothes aren't pressed or they don't have proper hygeine, that would make them "ghetto" regardless of race. my brother could not find a job for the longest because of his hair. he thinks people didn't want to hire him because he had dreads. it was most likely because his dreads were dirty and matted and clumping and standing tall on his head. he looked crazy and irresponsible. his hair was indicative of his lifestyle (which was a total match at the time). thats what the interviewers saw and thats why he didn't get the job. once he got a hair cut, he was offered a position. but i think if his dreads were neat, he would have been offered a position sooner. i know interviewers judge us by our appearance. but if we knew someone didn't want to hire us because they thought our hair style was ghetto, we'd be ready to file a discrimination lawsuit. we shouldn't put this ghetto thing on ourselves.

i don't think having straight hair makes a better presentation, having a neat appearance does.

get those braids, if ya wanna!

just my two cents.

If you're going job hunting with red, white and blue braids, or black and blue braids (which I see on a daily basis), then yes, those braids are GHETTO and you won't be taken seriously. However, I don't think that's your case, so to answer your question, no braids are not ghetto --- if done tastefully.

I've been on a job interview or two where I wore braids (individuals) swept up into an updo or a bun and have never received stares of disapproval. In fact, for this past job at an elementary school I applied for and was hired for, I had my hair in cornrows and the interviewer was Caucasian, so for me that goes to show that braids are not looked down upon, and if the employer/interviewer really had any intentions of hiring you, your hair should/would not be an issue!

my cousin had the nerve to say that braid were unprofessional to my mom who got cornrows over the summer. the whole idea is just stupid!! not that it matters-but my mom went to an well respected college and this jack ass had the nerve to say that with her GED!!! i also find that most people who say thing like this are the ones with nappy(in the bad way),dry ,broke-off hair, with bad looking straight weaves-who don't care about their hair-as long as its staight.

o yall aint right...lol...

Yeah I know, I know!!!! :D :D :D

Seriously though, I don't want to come across as anti-braids but I think the priority should be placed on getting the job. After they put the first pay check in your hand then priorities can be re-evaluated.

The young lady who started the thread indicated that she's a senior in college and looking for a job. New graduates don't have the luxury of turning down jobs right and left over 'hair' principals, because six months after graduation, Sallie Mae wants her money and wants it on time.
