Braidouts

I have found that my braid outs look best when done after a fresh wash. I spray Pantene R&N wrap & set lotion on damp, moisturized hair. I do 6 to 7 braids with jojoba oil on my ends. I roll the ends with perm rods and cover with a silk scarf. In the morning I take out the braids, style without picking out the wave pattern, mist with a little distilled water and go. During the day I mist again with distilled water if my ends look dry. At night I mist until almost damp and rebraid. I spray just my scalp with Surge and cover with a silk scarf. I never use rubber bands but I always use end papers. I make it last until the next wash by pulling it all on top of my head for a cute, wavy ponytail or a wavy french roll. The key is moisture so your hair looks soft not dry and frizzy. I hope this helps. Happy braiding!

I wash with tea tree shampoo, condition with suave tropical coconut detangle... after that I just pull out sections and apply pure mango butter (from the health food store) and braid and I do that until I have about 20-25 braids. I spritz with water or rosemary spritz and then put my bonnet on and go to sleep... the next morning I may take it out or wear a hat all day and take the braids out the following day... there are pics in my album if you want to see the style or the products

I make sure my hair is smooth as I create my braids. Then, I do about 10 braids all over (typically only 4 though) with perm rods on the end and sleep with them. The next morning, I take them down with oil on my fingers/hands. Then, I separate them with my hands. Sometimes I rebraid or I may just pile it on top of my head at night.

Hairlove, your braidouts are just fabulous!!!! That's what I'm aimimg for, but, unfortunately, I don't seem to have enough of a curl pattern in my hair to make it look that was. t comes out more of a wave pattern, but it's still cute! Do you use hairspray or gel to keep the style all day, or it stays by itself?

Sometimes I wash my hair, apply conditioner, leave the conditioner in and just braid it into 14 braids. Take the braids out the next day when my hair is completely dry. Arrange hair (without actually combing it), and I'm good for at least 4 days. At night I put my hair in a loose ponytail and cover it with my silk scarf.

Sometimes I wash my hair, condition, rinse the conditioner out and then use Pantene R & N moisturizing creme and a little Black & Sassy creamy set on each section that I braid. Leave the braids in overnight, et cetera.

I don't rebraid at night, and I usually don't apply any water on the following days. The water would make my hair look kind of frizzy.

I haven't yet found what is the "perfect routine" yet. You never know how the braidouts will turn out!

qtpi,

I don't use anything extra to hold the style. It stays all day by itself probably b/c my hair is damp when I do it. Also, the curls that I achieve on the ends are from perm rods. I have about 7 inches of natural hair and the rest is relaxed.

I agree with Nay on not applying water the next time. That would surely make my hair frizz, too! I also only wore this braidout down once. AFter that, it's back in my everyday style - scrunchy updo.

Do you ladies ever use lotta body setting lotion to help set the braidout? Would using this be too drying? I notice most of you are not using any kind of setting lotion.

I've never tried lotta body. I tried the Pantene R&N setting spray, and it didn't help my braidout at all. I didn't like it.

The Black & Sassy creamy set helps to "set" it some, but it seems that my hair looks drier faster when I use it. It also can leave your hair kinda hard if you use too much.

I don't use anything to set my braidouts like setting lotion. For the curled ends with perm rods, I use Pantene Conditioning Spray which is my leave-in.

hi, I do them normally after washing my hair. when it´s still wet I apply my leave-in and mousse for hold. with that I am fine to wear it open for 2 or 3 days (even with nightly moisturizing)

When I do braidouts I like the looser waves, so I part down the center and just do two french braids after washing and applying leave in and oil. Though lately, instead of two french braids, my fave has been to do two strand twists. I like the waves better.

Sometimes I do the two french braids on dry hair, but not on hair that's been air dried. It only looks right if the hair is a smooth straight first. So on the occasional times that I might flat iron, wrap get a blow out for a straight style, a few days later I might do the two french braids at night for a different type of wavy look. The dry set waves are much looser. If fact I don't really have to wash again to get them out. If I wrap my hair and sleep on it, my hair will be back to straight.

I'm may or may not put up pics, if I do, I'll post again.

[/ QUOTE ] This is key. I've been neglecting this part of the routine, and my hair looks dry and frizzy.

When I first started doing braidouts I was using Lottabody, and it worked well with my hair, now I really don't use setting lotion just lots of leave-in conditoners and it works just the same.

When I was relaxed, I started with Motions foaming lotion and did 8 braids going back. I always did my braids tight, b/c I liked more, smaller waves. Later, I used just Kemi Oyl to braid while transitioning. But braidouts are best done on freshly washed/conditioned hair. Any other way and it won't look as nice..
