I know you asked for braidout only responses, but I did flat twist outs for about 8 months straight...I just wanted to say that yes, I had to flat twist or single twist almost everyday.
I got used to it and started styling it without a mirror in front of the tv before bed. I cocoon the ends (naptural85's youtube method). I usually did two flat twists in the back (ears to nape) and four at the top (crown).
I primarily used Shea moisture smoothie, then shea butter and ecostyler gel or talia wajid twisting gel. I also used Shea butter or a light oil before I untwist.
The back of my hair retained length like nobody's business. The sides finally grew longer than they ever have before.
I'm in a bun now as I grow past BSL, but I'm going back to twist outs/braid outs this weekend. I tried to be very gentle twisting/braiding and untwisting/unbraiding and I feel like I lose way less hair with this method than with anything else.
