Hi all,
I'm having issues with braidouts.
Up to this week, I have more new-growth so I can no longer get the nice wavy look from french braids.

Can anyone give me advice and/or tell me how you do your braidouts?
I conditioned my hair last night and braided my hair in 4 sections. It came out a mess. I don't even want to go out today..:( I have a very important errand I may miss. I look like a total fuzz ball. Tonight I have a metaphysical seminar...What can I do with this hair???:look:

Does anyone do braidouts the night before to set the hair?
How long does it take before your hair dries to set?
What type of products do you use on your braids?

Anything......:wallbash:

I use Paul Mitchell's Foaming pomade on my wet hair and then make 4 or 5 cornrows, add a perm rod to the very ends and sit under my hood dryer for almost and hour. In the morning when I take them out I just fluff and go.

Maybe you need something that will set the waves for you, maybe a diluted setting lotion.

You should put your hair in a bun and go take care of your business. Do not let a bad hair day get ya down.
It's funny you said that. I just did what you said already. Now for tonight though, I want to look my BEST.
Thanx:D

Thank you for the advice, I will check out that foaming pomade. I will see if Sallys carries it. Meantime, I have setting lotion under my sink that's been collecting dust. Maybe this will be a great opportunity. I don't have a heated dryer though, but I have a heat cap FWIW though, I now have something to work with.
I really appreciate your help. :Rose:
P.S. I just love your hair...got so curious and just had to take a peak. Hope you don't mind.:look:

Well, I wash my hair after 9 pm, so my hair is never dry enough to do the braid out the next day--I usually wear some sort of bun (it's still textured). During the week, I dampen my hair at night with my moisture spritz, add a leave-in and braid it in 5-7 sections. I add a pomade for my ends, and put the hair on flexirods (using blue lately). I wear a satin scarf to bed. Next day I unbraid and go (but also I rarely wear my hair without a scarf, ponys or a bun--I have HIH disease and will play with my hair all day if I don't keep it out my face).

I do some sort of braid out everday, regardless of how I style my hair.

Bumping for Replies!!

Does anyone have pictures of a good braid-out on shoulder length or below hair? My braid-outs look like a stringy S-Curl. I wash, condition, deep condition, leave in conditioner, moisturize with Olive Oil and then braid about 7 braids going straight back and put rollers at the ends. What am I missing??

Sorry....I never do mine on wet hair.

I apply a creamy moisturizer/leave-in to my length, braid, the spritz lightly with some sort or scented water, plain water or watery moisturzing mix I've created.

When I take the braids loose, I seperate them slightly. Not a lot.

The other night I applied ORS OO, braided, then smoothed about 2 pea size amounts of FOTE Aloe Vera gel down the surface of the braids.(I didn't want toe wet it since it was semi-pressed)

The next morning I sprayed some Kenra Spritz(just a little) throughout my hair. My braidout was so pretty and shiny.

I do mine on wet hair and it comes out very wavy and defined. What I like to do is let the towel soak up some of the moisture then I plait in 6-8 plaits. I use a leave in and an oil to seal it before braiding. After each individual plait, I then take the towel and kind of blot it so it won't be too wet because mine always frizzes and looks horrible if it's too wet. I put a little olive oil on the ends and then sleep with a scarf. In the morning it's dry and beautiful.

more newgrowth = more braids for a decent braidout. With lots of newgrowth and only four sections I'm not surprised that your braidout didn't turn out that well.

Try doing 7 or 8 cornrows going back. That may help. I have pics of how I do my braidout/twistouts: http://public.fotki.com/JenniferMD/2005/may/

Thank you so much for the step by step Tutorial. One thing, what did you put on your hair prior to the twist out? Also, How did you skrunch your hair? Is it like squeezing it between the palm of your hand and then spraying it?

Also, I have tried the braid out on my transitioning hair, it looked too stringy. I braided 7-8 braids going back. I think I will try the twist, because the braid-out doesn't work for me.

Again, thank you so much for the tutorial.

Also you might try using S-Curl as your moisturizer on wet hair before you braid. Just a little bit of S-Curl at the top of the braid then smooth down the length then braid it. 8 to 9 braids all over in the direction you are going to style your hair so it is less manipulation.

Hi JenniferM
I love your pictures. Beautiful hair!
Step 5 is the one I've been doing, but with french braids and not twists. I don't know how to do those:ohwell:
Anyway, my hair isn't as long as yours either, but I like the idea of the twists because my hair has gotten to the point of tangling at the ends when I braid, so I have to be very careful not to tear my hair apart.
How does the hair look after you take out the twists? Is it more or less wavy?

Hey,Thanks for your input. It really helped me last night.
I went to Sallys' and purchased the Ion Curl Definition Cream yesterday and spritzed my hair with water. http://www.sallybeauty.com/shop/1320/302506
Check it out.
It dried in just enough time to go to the seminar.:clapping: I just did an overnight braid-out using the same product and the results are great. It's very moisturizing stuff.

Thanks for the advice. My hair is not as long as yours, but I will keep it for consideration.;)

No problem, I'm glad it helped. I use Ultra Sheen finishing lotion on my hair before twisting. For the skruching...you're mixing two different styles. The skrunching is for when I use Dream Curls and do a ripple effect after I wash my hair. My twist are done on completely dry hair and after the twist are taken out I don't do any skrunching. :)

Twist are really easy and in my opinion the waves come out more natural looking. The end result is lesser waves but deeper waves than with braids. Tangling was a problem I was having too, but with the twist it's a non issue. :)

Jen-

Your twist-out looks great! Can you tell me how you do your flat twists...or do you know of somewhere I can get directions?

Hey Phoenix

It's so simple that it's hard to explain  You literally just twist your hair while picking up more hair as you go down your head. I'm going to take step-by-step pictures tonight and have them posted by Sunday for you. :)

Thank you so much. I'm looking forward to seeing them!

Being a transitioner as well this is how I do my braid-outs:

If I want a tight braid-outs, I put my hair in 6 to 8 plaits, spray my hair with an olive oil/water mixture (enough to saturate my hair), put my hair in a silk scarf and let it air dry overnight. In the morning, I un-plait it, fluff it with my fingers, put on a panty-hose head band and go about my day...For pics look at my fotki--password is in the profile...

JenniferMD,

Since your twists are done on dry hair, how do you set you hair after you wash? Do you air-dry in a ponytail? I noticed that when I had an emergency yesterday that braiding dry hair was easier (no tangling of the hair)….and I just spritzed it with a water mixture.
