Hello Ladies...I am a faithful user of the Mizani relaxer (mild). And I know I am a type 4 (whether I am an A or B...I'm still trying to figure out). Every 10 weeks or so I travel home to my favorite hair stylist to get the relaxer. But what box relaxer would you ladies recommend just in case something comes up to where I couldn't get home? I work in a place where my hair needs to look decent every day. Even though it is not a written rule, too many "protective" styles will not fly. So if you're in a crunch...what box brand would you pick up and why? Just wondering...(My hair has been thriving thanks to all of the advice I have picked up from you ladies, so I don't want to ruin what I've gained.)

I would recommend either Gentle Treatment or PCJ Adult Formula.

I recommend Gentle Treatment because it was my first relaxer (and I use it now) and have always been satisfied with the results. I only tried other box relaxers because I was a product junkie. I recommend PCJ because of the Nutrisheen that it provided. Nutrisheen (comes in the box) is used after you rinse the relaxer but before the neutralizing shampoo. PCJ really made a difference in my hair. It really grew like crazy!!!! I don't use it now because it's not available here and I don't think that, those type of chemicals can be shipped through the mail.

I would choose PCJ Adult Formula over Gentle Treatment because keeps my hair from being excessively dry from the relaxer (because of the nutrisheen).

I'm not sure of my hair type, but it is thin, fine, soft and gets really curly when wet.

Hope this helps.

I know i might get rocks thrown at me for this one but...Phyto's relaxer comes in a box and its REALLY good. I know its expensive but its worth the health of your hair and the results are wonderful. I can tell the difference between the hair thats been previously permed with affirm vs. the phyto.(affirm -> thin and scraggly). I have been trimming regularly b/c i cant wait to cut the affirm permed hair out, the phyto hair is much thicker. Just something to consider.

I'm gonna second the Phyto. She didn't say she wanted an inexpensive relaxer, just a box relaxer she could have on hand in case.

ITA This is, by far, the best box relaxer I've used. Definitely worth the money.

I havent tried Phyto, but I do self relax. I use ORS Relaxer. They have a great conditioner and line of products. I have also been pleased with Elasta QP.

it's funny you should post this.

I made a friend in the BSS yesterday ( i;m sure this happens to you guys as well ) and she was all "I want to show you the best boxed relaxer!" and she showed me the ORS Olive Oil Relaxer. I haven't used it but i've heard a lot of great things.

ORS Olive Oil Normal. I relaxed for the first time in almost 2 years with this relaxer this past weekend and I am very impressed. My hair is moisturized, soft, silky and smooth. I can't stop touching it. Also, I have a very sensitive scalp and there was no burning whatsoever. I'm very glad I went with ORS.

I also love the ORS Relaxer. I switched to it late last year and so far no more stinging and my hair comes out so soft and nice.

when i was relaxing my hair for a more straight effect, my favorite was Parnevu Tea Tree... i just really liked the after effect (plus the extra tea tree oil gave me all the moisture that i needed)... now that i just texturize, i use Africa's Best and i haven't had any problems with it...

If you are using Mizani Lye, I would try PCJ lye. You have to check the box - it is the no mix one with the girl AND the woman on it I think.

But if you use lye and like it, I would stick to lye relaxers. When you say box, I am assuming you mean something you can just buy in the store. I would go to a BSS where you can get lye relaxers at good prices. A lot of women here love Vitale Life and Body, which is quite mild. Also Designer Touch texturaizing relaxer in regular I just used and find it quite mild. I actually like it more than Vitale.

Thank you ladies for all of your helpful advice. I now will have products in mind if I ever have to self-relax. (Many of you talk about Phyto so much...I may have to break down and try it!)
