What's that about? I was walking past a very-well known Dominican salon and I saw a woman sitting in the chair with relaxer smoothed in her hair (overlapped mind you) and the hair dresser holding a blow dryer over her head going back and forth. I think I've heard someone mention it here, but I'm not sure. That can't be good.

Anyone know why they do this? Has anyone ever even seen this?

Lol..i think i may know why.
When relaxer is burning your scalp, any kind of cool air on the scalp distracts from the pain. I've had to do this while relaxing and it certainly helps...temporarily:mad:

I'd never heard of this practice and would not advise it. If the purpose is to cool a burn, it doesn't change the fact that the scalp is burning!

This salon should be in the "Salons to Avoid" thread! Run far, far away!

ITA! When all is said and done, that lady's scalp will still be damaged!!!

I knew it couldn't be good. The woman didn't look like she was in pain, but you know how some would do anything to get the hair straight. I know that used to be me! And to think I was gonna actually let them do my relaxer in the futue.

I used to do that. A hairdresser recommended that to process the hair bone straight, sit under the dryer. I had highlights too. Needless to say, my hair broke off realllllly bad. I had shoulder length hair, and my sides and middle broke off terribly. I got my hair cut into a shag. It kept breaking. Less than 6 mos later, I had to do the bc. If you love your hair, don't do it.;)

somebody posted awhile ago about a bad salon experience where the stylist did the same thing and her hair was damaged.

Ladies, this should not be done AT ALL. I dont know who came up with this way to relax hair, but its totally wrong and dangerous. Quite frankly, these people should be turned over to the local Dept of Health or Cosmetology (whoever oversees beauty salons) and have their licenses revoked

If your stylist put a relaxer in your hair and it isn't relaxing, then you need a stronger or different relaxer. Actually, if a stylist knew what the heck they were doing, they would've known what relaxer to apply to your hair. If your stylist suggests this method of relaxing, I'd strongly suggest you immediately reject it! You have the absolute right to disapprove any services you dont want.
