Hey girls!
I didn't want to put this in the long thread which I have read. My Softliss is supposed to be delivered today (tracking says arrival at my post office) along with my Denman flat iron brush and flat iron comb...:lachen:The postlady better leave it on the porch.:lachen: The new blow dryer won't be here until Monday; but it's cool. I am doing my Mom's hair tonight. I have a big task in front of me. I have to rinse/cellophane/or semi permanent her, dust her ends and then apply the BKT.

So here are my questions. I tried to arrange them in order so they're not all random.

Tools:
Does Softliss need absolutely need to have a fan or that mask that Asian nail techs wear :lachen:? It's formaldehyde free; but I plan on doing it next to a window.

Where can I get some rubber ear covers locally? I was thinking home depot or Lowe's. She has demanded that she has these. :ohwell:

Process:
I know I should go through and do the color and the trim first.. but depending on when I get out of here (if it's too late I'm scratching the trim).. but do I need to do blow dry after I do the color? Or can I just start with the clarifying poo on the hair after she comes from under the dryer without blowdrying?

Has anyone who used the mask went under the dryer with it? Or should I just let it sit like they say for 5 minutes?

I'm giving her until 1 a.m. to be finished...then she has to be out of my house...:lachen::lachen:Done or not done... (kidding)

Oh and any recommendation about a good semi perm that does good gray coverage? She wants Bruce Lee black...:lachen: And her grays in the top are resistant than a mother.. my colorshowers and adore and clairol beautiful was a waste of time. The only thing that really works for her is bigen; but I'm scared that may be damaging her hair...but she is concerned about them being fully covered. Would it be safe to use bigen with the BKT?

Hey Fabulosity,
I know time is of the essence which is why I am responding (I am certainly no expert by any means).

Though Softliss is "formaldehyde free" there are still fumes associated with it. I didn't use the mask, and only had open windows through out the house with a small personal fan but I teared a bit when applying the treatment to the very front of my hair, and when blowdrying the front, I eventually decided to just dry the treatment under a hooded dryer because the fumes were annoying.

I have NO idea where to get the ear covers, home depot sounds like a good idea. I did not use them at all, and I'm not sure why she really wants them. I can only see the need for them when flat-ironing to make sure you don't burn you ears, but due to black womens history with pressing hair I'm sure this isn't a problem.

Process:
I don't color at all so I'm not really familiar with it.
But the trim...I dunno I would trim after the treatment is over so you get a even final trim all over. I know they said BKT can disguise split ends, but I was still able to see my splits after softliss

The mask: I just sat at my computer searching LHCF while the treatment was in, no dryer (I do have a Pibbs).

ETA: BTW I know your waiting on your new blowdryer but I didn't use a handheld for much of the process. I airdried after clarifying and sat under the hooded dryer after the treatment, and did a lightly damp to dry flatiron (this is how I normally flat-iron)

Oh she wants the ear thing so I can get super close to the edges since she's about 75% natural. I burned her one time when she jerked...and now she wants to get all "excra" :lachen: :lachen:

So looks like I'm going to be calling around for the mask thing and the ear things...hmmm..maybe Ace hardware.

Thanks so much! Hmm maybe I should trim after I do the treatment and before applying the mask...that makes sense!!!

She's going out of town and of course wants to be divalicious...lol.

Oh trust me she will be divalicious!
I'm sure you can do the trim after the treatment. My hair was MUCH silkier after the mask.

Hey Fab, I will answer what I can:

Ear covers--Try a BSS . They should have those and masks too.

Trim-- After BKT because of the smooth silky results after. That way you know that the hair is even, etc. This has been recommended by EVERYTHING that I have read.

Color--Bigen is good. It uses no peroxide or ammonia. You just mix with water. It is also recommended that you color PRIOR to the BKT treatment. I personally would use a color that is helpful in coloing grays. BKT is keratin, it is not a chemical. You cannot overprocess. It does not change the structure othe hair like a relaxer. It is just a "coating" that is baked on the hair. That is why you want to color first. Since she is mostly natural, it will help her BKT last even longer. Also GOOGLE "BKT + color, or trim or anything else that you may have a question about. Thats what I did/do.

So, recap--Color, BKT, Trim...LOOK FLY! :gorgeous: HTH you and mama FAB :yep:

I ordered the ear protectors on amazon but I have really small ears and they dont fit. I used a mask the 1st time I did my BKT but last time I learned to use alot less product and didnt have the need for a mask.

Next time, I've got to dust my ends...

Y'all I am whupped.. I am just getting done... Mama Fab just got in the car... an hour too late.. Her hair turned out FABULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't wait to get mine done...
Okay if you all haven't gotten that Denman flat iron brush... IT IS THE SHIZNIT... I can't wait to use it when the new FHI blowdryer comes.. I mean I think I am going to order another one... it is :lick: I can grab the hair at all angles with the sides of the brush and it didn't hurt her... (she and most of my friends are tenderheaded)... we were loving it.. I also loved the Sedu Flat iron comb.. it took a while getting used to. I will upload pictures later because I am in the bed now...lmao. But I did take them.

It is a lot of steps.. I guess if we didn't the color it would have been about 45 minutes shorter. We did the Bigen in "Oriental Black" and it looks good and fully covered her resistant a$$ grays! I am so tired. I did get a little nauseous for the fumes... Umm the mask (step 3) is an absolute must.. Her hair looked okay but was a bit weighed down with the BKT after the first flat iron.. but after a cold water rinse and the mask... OMG..shine city.. I had to turn the flash off the camera because all it was..was BLING. I am going to continue to use the kit.. no substitutions...when something works.. I go with it. Oh.. and when we rinsed... her hair remained straight... Mind you she was curly sue before... but I wonder if it would be as straight if we used poo... anyway; I'll do her a second treatment in 2 weeks... And her hair has grown so much; she is full SL now. Which is a good look for her.. I really need to learn how to trim.. I just did a minor dusting and I think I did a good job.

I love BKT... now I can't wait for mine!

Thanks, she's already called me like she loves her hair this morning and that we're never doing a relaxer again. My mom's natural hair is the best. I don't know why she got a relaxer in the first place.

We got the chocolate kit for $96... it really does smell like chocolate..
:wow: Double Wow! Can you do my hair too? :spinning:

Congrats! We can't wait to see yours now!

LOL! If you were in Michigan, just drop by... my FHIs are always plugged in...lol.

I can't wait either...I'm in negotiations :sekret: with my stylist now ..either tomorrow or next Saturday... :lachen:

So, is you stylist going to do yours or are you going to do your own. If your stylist is going to do yours can you give me their info because I am not that far from you (Novi) and I was going to do mine next week but I am dreading it because I hate doing my hair.

My stylist is doing mine.. but she is not "doing them" yet per se. I am bringing her my BKT stuff like here...this is what you do... lol. She's watched a couple vids on YT and is a flat iron gangsta so I know that it will come out good... I don't know if I could properly apply it to my hair.. I was going to get my mom to do it to me.. but I didn't want to take the risk on wasting the product.

Hi Fabulosity! I checked out that brush and came across a new denman. It's the same but it has ceramic plates in addition to the natural boar bristles. What do you think? The thermo or the new thermoceramic? Since the plates heat up as you blow dry (for record drying as they say), do you think that would be too much heat? TIA

ETA: They cost the same.
