hello, i am getting a phytorelaxer in 2 weeks and coming out of a weave in one week. i want to put a protein barrier on my hair to keep it from getting too straight and leave that in when i go to the salon. i live in france but brought dudleys constructor, joico k-pac and aphoghee keratin reconstructor back from US. has anyone tried using these as a protein barrier? and if not what do you suggest? i am scared that my hair will break off, has that ever happened to anyone? i have been babying it for 4.5 months. but i gotta try!!!
thanks so much,
kimba

Navsegda started a thread about silk protein to protect hair from relaxer or any other chemical treatments.

Search on "silk protein". I'm not sure how to add the link to my reply.

I wish you well, Kimbaparis.

You have to upload a picture to an internet server first before trying to post it. Pics from your computer will not work. For a quick upload without having to sign up, go to http://tinypic.com

I strongly advise against using a reconstructor (especially heavy duty ones like the ones you bought), putting it on the hair, and then LEAVING it on when you go to the salon. You do not want those chemicals in the reconstructor reacting with the chemicals in the relaxer. I smell d-i-s-a-s-t-e-r. If not immediately, later.

You may seriously regret it. For instance, Aphogee makes your hair extremely hard and you aren't even supposed to manipulate it in any way while it's on the hair. If it's on there, you will not be able to get the relaxer in after it has hardened without some serious breakage. If you don't want your hair to relax as straight, then tell the beautician not to leave it on as long so you can purposely underprocess or texlax.

I used Aphogee Keratin & Green Tea Restructurizer the day before my texturizer as the protein barrior. You could also mix a conditioner into the relaxer to cut the strength. Look for the thread called "Curve's silkener secret" or something like that.

thanks for the help. i am worried because i think my hair broke off due to overlap and i wanted to protect is. will a strong protein conditioner a week before help with that? and can i do a protein conditioner a day or two after i take out my weave (which is over a protective net and i moisturize every other day with an applicator bottle) thanks so much. kay

I think you are confusing strengthening with protecting. By strong protein conditioner, do you mean something like Nexxus Keraphix? Protein can reconstruct the hair bonds and add structure (giving it strength) but it's not going to actually protect your hair from the chemicals in the relaxer because the chemicals in the relaxer are just going to be touching the newly formed proteins anyway if you don't actually use something that is a barrier--like silk. The difference between silk proteins and other proteins is that in many products like protein reconstructors, the molecules actually have a low enough molecular weight to penetrate but in many silk protein products, the silk molecules are too large to do anything but coat, and thus they add a protective barrier (just like silicones can coat the hair). Biosilk Silk Therapy for instance only has large silk molecules, but CHI Silk Infusion has large, medium, and small (some penetrate to allow gentle reconstructing, while others coat to add protection).

And if by protect you mean you don't want to relax as straight, then do what one of the other posters said about mixing conditioner in with the relaxer or you can just tell the beautician to leave the relaxer on for less time.

You are getting some great advice from these ladies. If you want to strengthen beforehand, I would suggest a heavy protein treatment a week before your relaxer. To protect my hair from overlap right before the Phyto relaxer, I coat my hair with PhytoSpecific Revitalizing Treatment (a mixture of various oils) and let it sit for an hour or two before I relax, making sure I don't get it on the new growth or scalp. It does a wonderful job of protecting my already relaxed hair. HTH!;)

Thank you so much Lavendar, Royal Glory and Navsegda. I think I will do the protein a week before and coat with the phytospecific oil two hours before. Phytospecific products are one of the things I can easily find here. Perhaps I'll try the Joico k-pac beforehand? Or do you reccomend the Dudley's Reconstructor? I have yet to try either. I used Aphoghee heavy duty one once and I think it was a little too strong for me. The Keratin looks milder but maybe too mild.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I like JOICO K-Pak. :)

I second this. I think this would be great to use the week before your relaxer. Also if you want, for extra protection, you could also use it the week after.

You are quite welcome!!! I have only used Aphogee, so I can't speak to the other treatments you mentioned. I do know that you have to follow up the Aphogee with a deep moisturizing conditioning treatment in order to get a good result, and using Porosity Control after that is even better. By the way, I notice in your siggy you mention having fine fragile hair and co-washing 3-4 times a week after working out. I also have extremely fine fragile hair and did the same. This spelled major disaster for me. After a few months my hair was coming out by the handfuls, especially when I washed or conditioned. Turns out this was way too much moisture for my fine hair, and I had to trim and do weekly Aphogee treatments for 4 weeks, then every 6 weeks. This brought my hair back to a normal state. The reason why your hair may seem so full is because you may have strands of hair that have split up the shaft in many pieces. That is what happened to mine. The hair may start at the root in one piece and then split into 4 tiny strands. When it breaks it really looks tragic!!! After each Aphogee treatment I use a mixture of Elasta DPR-11, honey, EMB, and let that condition with heat for at least an hour. Then 15 minutes with Porosity Control. That did wonders for my breakage, but it took a couple of times to get totally under control. It's extremely important for fine-haired ladies to maintain the protein/moisturize balance, and it's not always easy to do..so establishing a strict regimen is best to be on the safe side. Blessings!;)
