Any reviews on the best NYC salons for coloring natural hair?

I'm trying to achieve this color or something close to it:

Well I hope someone answers this. I have an appointment scheduled at Aveda Institute but if there is a better suggestion, I can't wait to hear it.

Great color choice.

I went to Marie at http://www.afrigenix.com/AFRIGENIXHOME.html to get my color done in February using Matrix SoColor that has no ammonia or bleach. They specialize in natural hair even though my color was done on relaxed hair. What I love about this place is that it is by APPOINTMENT ONLY! That means no waiting around while your stylist wants to chitchat and gossip with the person in front of you. When you come in, you are immediately seated in your stylist chair and your appointment begins on time. Rare in a black salon... so rare! Marie was excellent and I would go back to her again. I plan to once I finish transitioning. Good luck!

I guess I will let you know as I have an appointment with Aveda coming up tomorrow.

Thanks for the review. I just recently heard about Afrigenix and am surprised they aren't as widely publicized as other higher end black salons (Tendrils, Curve Salon, Khamit Kinks, etc.). I'll have to give them a call. :)

I am considering a trip to Afrigenix because I found that Khamit Kinks won't do all the services I want (roller sets, etc.). Afrigenix is much easier for me to get to anyway so it might be a win for me.

Are you still happy with their services?

PS - I never made it to Aveda Institute due to a botched hair coloring from a local and former trusted salon. I got scared when I found out that I would need a double step process to correct the mess :-(.

HairRules Salon. Check them out.

Agreed, 1000000% !!!

So just to update I decided to go to Tameeka at Christo 5th Avenue for my color and it was a horrible horrible experience. I pretty much came out looking far worse than I went in and it didn't even look like I got color. Of course, I still had to shell out over $300 for "services" rendered. Tameeka tried to make it up to me by asking for a second chance to fix her botch job but I decided against it. I would have rather dished out another $300 elsewhere than go back to her.

Fast-forward to end of September 2010 and I scheduled an appointment with Katiria (main colorist) at Hair Rules. She hooked me up!! She did a fantabolous job!! I also had to get my hair trimmed because Tameeka also gave me a botch cut so I had to also pay for a hair cut. Since then, I go to Katiria for color and Dailey (stylist) for cuts. It's been one of the best decision I've ever made for my hair. I usually schedule an appointment every 3 months with them and received stellar results each time.

So for anyone looking for a colorist in NYC, I second going to Hair Rules. They are simply the best and they definitely know how to handle both natural and relaxed heads. Besides which, that's where Estelle and Kelis get their hair done. :yep:

Any updates mzteaze?? I'm also from North Jersey area and though its a few train rides away, I highly recommend going to Hair Rules in NYC for your color.

As it turns out, I took a chance and went to an Aveda salon in Oradell, 5 mins from home. I met a nervous but supremely helpful white stylist who took her time and gave me the perfect custom color. She also gave me one of the Best dustings I have had since I moved to NYC / NJ area. I will definitely go back to her.

Now the big con, she was not the world's best Stylist. Coloring and cuts are her forte, BUT she is game for trying any and everything. We played with roller setting my hair and a light flat ironing. She used a heat protectant and listened to any suggestions I had about tools and/or products. She was very open tome being any tools or products for future visits AND will trim my hair if I wash it at home. A real find since I wanted the service not the styling expertise.

Thanks for sharing the update. Glad you found someone that gave you exactly what you wanted! :)
