A few months ago I started purchasing the generic version of Cetaphil skin cleanser to shower with instead of soap. This generic is Walgreens Gentle Skin Cleanser. Today, I pre-con'd my hair, washed, then applied conditioner and left it for about an hour. My hair is so dry that no matter how long I conditon my hair with conditioner, once I rinse it out, my hair starts to tangle again. So, while I was in the shower, I decided to use the body cleanser on my hair and it was excellent! It has incredible slip and I only had to use a fraction of what I use in conditioner. The comb just slid through my hair! I rinsed and my hair still felt so soft but not greasy. I put some in my hair and left it as an experiment. I want to see what it does as a leave in. But I am going to start using this for my detangling. These are the ingredients: Water , Cetyl Alcohol , Propylene Glycol , Sodium Lauryl Sulfate , Stearyl Alcohol , Methylparaben , Propylparaben , Butylparaben.

I know some people don't like sulfates but for those who want to try this, please let me know yours results!

Hey, well if it works then i'd say keep doin ya thang! But know that sodium lauryl sulfate is a cleanser (like a soap). so it should be rinsed out completely. And i have no issue with using products with parabens as long as they the last on the list, but the butyl...i think this is the one most toxic, so i avoid the butyl. If i remember correctly, i think those alcohols are the good alcohols...

:look: :look: :look:

I also used Cetaphil to cleanse my scalp with just for kicks. I figured it does such a good job on my face so why not? And you know what?...It worked great!!!!!!! Left my hair soft like I had CO washed. :D But, I did rinse it out.

Well thanks for the info ladies. Maybe I won't use it as a leave in, BUT it works great as a detangler!

I might give it a try. I use this when my skin gets extremly dry. I think it comes in two differenty types. I think one comes with a green label and the other in blue. Don't quote me on this. What does the label on your bottle look like?

Re: shock

I had planned to do another experiment with jojoba oil and conditioner, but decided to try the Cetaphil knock-off instead. I use it to wash my baby's hair, so it should be OK for mine. I globbed on a bunch to wash my hair, rinsed, and detangled under running water. Four to six minutes of detangling cut down to under two. In my excitement, I forgot to condition, but it seems fine so far. It is still drying, so hopefully my nettle ACV rinse and styling products will be enough.

Let's give it up to the fatty alcohols!:yay:

I am so glad you had similiar results. This new find makes it so much easier to detangle. It's like night and day. Not even the best conditioners work as well. I wonder which ingredients is the one that gives it so much slip. maybe I will research this weekend and see if it's somethng you can get without having to deal with the sulfates. Even thought I really don't have a problem with sulfates. This is definitely a keeper for me;)

Thanks for sharing the experience because I never would have thought to use it on my head.:clapping:

I think the cetyl alcohol is the key because propylene glycol and glycerin can be used interchangably as humectant ingredients. From my research, it is used to bring together conflicting items, like humectants and detergents. I was so tempted to get some cetyl alcohol from eBay today, but resisted.

Check what I found at an AlAnon site of all places:

...the cetyl alcohol found in modern personal care products is derived from coconut oil. It's a lubricant used to stabilize oil and water emulsifications. Which means, without it, your favorite moisturizer, lotion or aftershave balm would look more like unshaken salad dressing. Not an appetizing thought.

Cetyl alcohol is non-irritating, does not dry the skin, and is not known to complicate acne.

Over at the white site I visit, some people complained about it causing a waxy build-up, while another claimed it caused scalp acne. Well, I will just have to clarify and use my ACV rinses to avoid those issues.

Thanks for the info. I never knew that cetyl alcohol was something you could actually buy. If you ever try the cetyl alchol alone on your hair, let me know how it works for you. I was thinking about trying it as a leave in, but from you just said about the build-up and acne, maybe I'll just stick to using it as a detangler.:)

Thanks to the internet, you can find just about any ingredient now; eBay is the first place I hit. Check it out with eBay's search engine--it is wild all of the stuff you can find. If I only had more money and time...

If I get some, I will add it to my conditioners with some glycerin; I am too scared to use it alone. We need a chemist up in here!

Thanks Candiss, I ended up going to Walgreens today to buy some. The Cetaphil with the green label is the lotion.

I used it again this morning, doing a rinse-repeat before detangling. It definitely works better on the intial wash and under running water, like a hot knife through butter. I will be documenting this for about a month to see if I get any problems.

Has anyone else used it yet?

I have not used it in a long time, but it works great on my baby's curls. Let me grow some more hair first...
