Best cheapie chelating shampoo...if such a thing exists

Hi Ladies,

Forgive me if this topic has been previously addressed, but the search function kept giving me errors. What is the best inexpensive chelating shampoo? I just did a search on google, and the average price I'm seeing is approximately $20. If that's a good price, I don't mind paying it. However, I don't want to spend that much money if I don't have to.

Also, how frequently should one chelate if she is using 'cones on a daily basis? I haven't yet gotten to a point where my 'cone heavy leave-ins aren't working, but I want to be proactive.

A good cheap chelating poo is the Organic Root Stimulator aloe shampoo.

Remember though that chelating is for removing mineral buildup. Clarifying is for product buildup.

As far as how often, that really depends on your hair. Play it by ear. If you notice your hair feeling gummy or extra stiff or sticky then it might be time to remove the product buildup. Everyone is different. Some people need to clarify every 2 weeks, some only every 2 months.
 
Thanks for the speedy response! I'm just trying to make sure that I don't have too much product build up (specifically, b/c I use a lot of 'cones). Do you think that I should be using a clarifying shampoo or a chelating shampoo? If a clarifying shampoo would be more approrpriate, could you recommend a reasonably priced, but effective, one? Thanks again.

VO5 makes a clarifying poo is isn't half bad. Its the kiwi and lime one, the green one. Its like 99 cents.
 
I say go for the chelating poo since it will do both. I live in a hard water area, so mineral buildup is a concern. I have a small bottle of Nexxus Aloe Rid that was like $5.99 and its pretty gentle on the strands.

The Aloe Rid is nice too, I use that after my touch ups (comes in the kit)
 
i cosign on the ORS Creamy Aloe poo. I actually just used it 1 hr ago....and i luuuuuv it. It instantly thickened up my hair and It made my scalp feel so clean that it tingled. (whatever that's about)...however...there was really no need for me to try this since i don't have hard water and i use a lye relaxer:perplexed. so i don't really have heavy calcium buildup. i was just really curious to see what it would do to my hair under those circumstances. (and the fact i haven't clarified since beg. of feb & my hair has been acting up like crazy). But i'm actually impressed with the product.

I didn't know the aloe rid chelates.....I know it clarifies- that is definetely a plus if it aslo chelates. I bought the Kenra chelating poo - it was only 8.99. I did two lathers, which in hindsight 1 was enough, the 2nd lather made my heir feel kind of dry. The aloe rid does not make my hair feel stripped at all.

I use this once like every month or two. It really does the job of cleaning my scalp!! On campus we have hard water, so it makes my hair feel soft, but It doesn't detangle my hair as well as KeraCare Hydrating poo so I use a lil ORS and a lil Keracare and call it a day!! oooh lala. With that and Humecto my hair is sexy to the touch!

I've been using Elucence Volume Clarifying Shampoo which is a combination clarifying/chelating shampoo. It's $6 at CurlMart, and will probably sell for a similar price in stores. It's works really well, and is pH-balanced so it didn't strip my hair completely.

The search function gives EVERYONE errors. If you go to google advanced search, put longhaircareforum.com in the "search this website" and you will be able to just search Longhaircareforum. It's much faster than the working search engine ever was. HTH.
 
the best one i've used is the one that comes in the soft and beautiful relaxer box... so its like $5-6, i wish they sold it seperately...

Can you chelate and clarify together?

Not sure about BS, but there are poos that do both. The Kenra Clarifying poo also chelates.
 
I am wondering also if baking soda chelates as well? Also does anyone know of a chelating shampoo that does not have SLS- basically a more natural chelating shampoo?

I used it to wash. period. If I have lots of buildup, I double the amount of BS. If I am just washing, I keep it to about 1 T to 1 cup of water.
