I know some ladies airdry their hair if it works for them,, and I would like to know if anyone can share some light on how airdrying can benefit the hair. I have only airdried my hair twice and love the hassle free no rolling, but want to know how will it aid in my hair becoming healthier?

First of all, your doing away with the unnecessary heat. Not to mention that most of use or have used comb attachments to aid in straightening the hair as we blow dry, which causes more damage because of the combination of pulling and tugging that goes along with the heat. Honestly, when I decided to give up heat, specifically my blow dryer, I didn't know how I was going to manage my hair. It was a big adjustment, but one of the most beneficial ones that I've taken. I no longer stress about all of the hair that I see flying all over my bathroom (and I don't have to bother cleaning it up afterwards either) My hair doesn't feel dry and crunchy. It is noticeably thicker and shinier, etc. I can honestly say that I know I'll never give up heat completely. I do plan to use my flat iron a few times a year, but I will NEVER blow dry my hair again.

Basically, airdrying protects your hair from heat damage, because you're not using direct heat (like a blowdryer). Over time, your hair will be stronger and softer than if you blowdry it. However, everything does not work for everybody. Some ladies here use blowdryers with no problems, and some say that airdrying causes damage to their hair.

Ok, so is it possible that my hair may get thicker, because I could defintely use thickness,, and can it assist in in growth or retention?

It won't make your hair grow, but it should help with retention and thickness, because you're not breaking your hair off with heat appliances.

what she said ;)

I am no pro about hair in anyway, so I can only speak on the benefits for me.

Other than having hours where I can do other things around the house while my hair dries, my hair seems to retain moisture when I airdry.

when I have been forced to blowdry or sit under the dryer because of time contraints and my hair seems to lose moisture faster during the days following.

If I do use the blowdryer I have found a dryer stand helpful.(see pic below) I stand far away from it so the heat does not blow too hard on my hair and I never use a comb or comb attachment. That helps me retain more moisture (not like with airdrying though :) )

I cannot get smooth results on my texturized hair with rollersets. I just can't.
They would be good for me I'm sure.

It saves time too. Depending on what style you choose, while your hair is airdrying, you a free to run errands, go to bed, go to work, whatever is next on your list of things to do.

I am new to air drying. How do you style your hair before airdrying. Do you flat wrap it, roll it .......?? I would love to try it again but I am unsure how to style it.

I usually just pull mine back into a ponytail and add a roller to the end of it (so the ends dry smooth), or I braid it and pin it up. KiniKakes and Locks of Luv demonstrate these methods in their Fotkis. My hair is usually a little damp in the morning, so I just wear it pinned up for that day until it's completely dry. You can also airdry in a ponytail rollerset, pincurls, braids, or bantus. I'm just too lazy to try these other methods, LOL.

Ionic dryers are supposed to be gentler on the hair. As far as airdrying goes, it always leaves me with soft, shiny hair - but not totally smooth (I'm partly texlaxed). That's cool with me, though. What did you do to your hair when you airdried in the past?

:lachen: You are too much. Thanks for the tips though. I just can't imagine life with my rollersets and sit under dryer. Maybe I will dry under a dry for 30mins and then just finish off air drying.

Yup, a lot of folks do it that way.

Less manipulation. You don't have to comb out every strand so you can wrap it around a roller.

My hair feels so much more moisturized air drying than blow drying thats why Im not going to blow dry anymore.
When I blow dry my hair looks more frizzy and dry. The ion dryer yes made my hair look less frizzy than a regular dryer but my hair still felt kinda dry somewhat.

When I air dry I dont leave my hair dangeling because it will look frizzy so I put it in magnetic rollers and let it air dry to straighten it out a little bit.

Also I notice more shedding blow drying than air drying. Especially with the attachable combs.

Also like the someone else said when you air dry its better to do that if you are going to use any other source of heat like (flat ironing, curling, etc) because you are only using one source of heat.

Blow drying and flat ironing=my hair more dry.

I love to airdry. This was a skill that I thought I could not do before I came to LHCF. After a few letdowns, I can now air dry sucessfully. My main method is in a ponytail. My hair is now less dry, longer, and thicker thanks to airdrying.

I love airdrying my hair and have done so since I first came to LHCF. I threw out all my heating appliances so I didn't have a choice but to learn how to do this.

I usually airdry overnight either in ponytail rollerset (with several ponytails) or the combo scarf method plus rollers on the ends (thanks to Sylver2).

Airdrying keeps my hair soft and very moisturized, thicker and much healthier.:)

The benefits of airdrying for me are the same as the other ladies. I don't use my blowdryer anymore. I noticed an immediate difference in my moisture retention and thickness after 2 weeks.

The key for me is spritzing on leave-in conditioner (Suave Tropical Coconut & water) and moisturizer when my hair is about 50% dry, then seal with a little coconut oil. I use a detangling comb to comb thru, then part my hair down the middle, make a couple Pocohantas-style pigtails and bun the ends. Once I get past 5 weeks post, I'll section my hair into four parts instead of two.

If I don't moisturize beforehand, my hair is a mad, frizzy, HAM.

Airdrying is fabulous!

I have been able to retain growth since deleting blow drying from my routine.

I airdry with a leave-in & my SAA spray.

As it dries, I add a bit more leave-in ,then cross-wrap & tie w/silk scarf.

This has been a hair-saver!

i pretty much just do what i do when i'm going to blow dry except braid it. i put my leave-in in, mositurizer, and maybe chi silk infusions:confused: and braid it in several or just 2 braids. i'm not saying it isnt soft but my ends are waaay too ratty and dry looking. when my hair is in that state, thats when i see shedding and can never get that softness and smoothness on the ends like when i blow dry:ohwell:
or maybe i should put some setting lotion on the ends and rollerset them??? because thats my biggest issue with airdrying, the ends are so dry looking.

This seems to be my only problem with airdrying also. I have to find something that will keep my ends from being crispy, the rest of my hair is fine.. I am not sure what I can use,, I have tried several things,, but there is one key product I need and haven't found it yet:perplexed .

I LOVE airdrying my hair. The only time I use a blow dryer is after my touch up. Before airdrying, I suffered from very thin hair. I thought my sister was the one who was naturally blessed with thick hair but now I know it was all the heat and over processing with relaxers that lead to my hair thinning out. Airdrying has helped my hair thicken up so much. I never in my life thought I could have thick hair and now it's super thick! There are many benefits of airdrying but thickness was the greatest reward for me.

After washing and conditioning, I towel dry and then let is drying hanging straight down

I haven't read the whole thread....but I would add that I didn't see the benefits of airdrying until probably a month later. I didn't see a big difference the first time I did it. That would be because my hair was dry (from blowdrying regularly in the past). As my hair became less and less dry the more I airdried, the shinier and healthier it looked. The ends weren't as frizzy.

To see REAL benefits, you have to airdry more than once. Don't expect a miracle the first time you do it.
