I washed my hair late and was too tired to rollerset and wanted something different from my flexirod set so I decided to try bantu knots

It started off OK, not too big, not too small. I sat under my hood dryer for about 40 minutes and then went to bed with them still in.

The next afternoon I took them out to find this....:nono:

OK, not quite but VERY close

After some more finger combing, I managed to tame it down enough to step outside

but I still couldn't brave it so I fought to pull it back into a ponytail

I'm just happy I didn't have anywhere to go that day, I'd have had to cancel

I've detangled now and put into about 8 twists to get it a bit straighter, but I think tomorrow I'll end up co-washing and rollersetting properly.

Has anyone had successful bantu knot sets?

you made me laugh. you hair looked cute with the head band on. I love biiiig hair. I tried bantu knots and did not like the results that I had either.

Never again for me as well...mine came out worse than yours though. My hair was a knotted mess! I love the ponytail though!

i like my results w/ bantu knots. i never had much sucess picking them out except when i was trying to make my texlaed hair look nappier but when i keep them intact they look nice

i like the look it gives. like curly yet silky dreadlocks

Girl, the same thing happened to me back in the day. It looked like I had little trees growing out of my head.:ohwell: I've been too scared to even attempt it again.

Maybe it would have been better if you did twisted bantu knots. You do two starnded twists or braids the put it in the knot. But i never set them under the dryer so idk how they would turn out.

I'm relaxed, my bantu knots can either come out great or come out shabby. There is no in-btwn!
It doesnt look bad in the ponytail, Im not sure what went wrong, lol.

i think the problem is that you did them on wet hair an possibly in too many sections. Since my hair is only SL i embrace the shrinkage because my hair doesn't hang down in braidouts/twistouts/bantu knot outs no matter what i do. I expect big hair. But in any case, i do it on dry hair, generally on hair thats dirty. I put a little redken butter treat on each section followed by some coconut oil.

The first picture is my first bantu knot set ever.... def not what i was expecting, but all of my friends really liked my curly fro and wanted to know how i did it. The second picture was much later, i just pulled it back and then straw set the little side hairs.

So that is to say...i think that it takes practice to figure out how much product and how many sections you need to get the look you want.

This looks good, I like how they turned out.

You set looked good, I especially liked the second pic

You're right, I probably did too many sections. IF I try them again I will do maybe just 4 or 5 and see how it turns out.

I agree with unalteredone. I've never tried bantu knots, but I've done a little research on them and it seems like the best results come from doing it on dry hair and not sitting under a dryer.

Also, try it with fewer knots. Let us know if you try it again!

BTW - I think your hair looked cute in the wrap and the ponytail!

OMG!!! I tried Bantu Knots just the other day! Unfortunately, It was a Saturday night when I set it up, and wanted to go to church on Sunday. I got up extra early for Church and OMG!! My hair is short, so it looked horrible. It was dry and I was afraid to comb it. As far as finger combing, the most I could do is wet it slowly (co-wash water) and try to get the crinckles out. I used Frutise - Colour Seal Leave-In and some their Gloss line, and my hair was brittle dry. I was sooo upset. As a matter of fact I am going to start a thread on here for anyone who is willing to pay for the S&H they can have the products.

I say find something new!!! I quote you.....emmmmm NEVA AGAIN!...lolol

I love bantu sets...it was easy to return to this familiar style from my childhood. I rock the knots for a few days and then have tight "chuch" curls for at least 2 days.

Your set came out ok for your 1st try :) I woulda put some coconut oil on my fingertips raked it through my hair & kept it movin!

Ha, I tried bantu knots my first week of being texturized and I was so very excited. Then I took them out the next day and both me and my mother were like :nono:. So no more bantus for me!

:lachen::lachen::lachen: wow. You have to laugh, thanks for sharing it reminds me that other people's hair does the same thing.

You did some really nice knots there and it definately makes a pretty ponytail. You should try it again, maybe your hair has to be be dry first and you may need to experiment with products.

Hopefully someone can give you some good tips coz im sure i've seen a few ladies who have had gorgeous results after taking out their knots.

Ok, I was NOT expecting to see Buckwheat! :lachen:

Anyway, I am relaxed (just touched up again after 9 months post). I have tried bantu knots and they always come our perfectly. The key for me is to only do 4.

Two in the front and two in back.

I tried this style in College...I guess I was trying to find myself or something LOL. Anyway, it was my way to go natural without going natural. I've done this on wet hair and dry hair as a way to keep the style going. For me it seems to work best on wet hair only if I do not have a lot of new growth--I am a 4b and those extra coils in the front and in the "kitchen" detracted from the style (it was like I had 2 confused styles going). I have since learned about sort of flat twisting the front/tying it down with a scarf/setting the front knots more purposefully (to part it or not, which direction to put the knot in etc) with an eye toward how I want to wear it. As far as how many knots, I did a bunch, the key for me was not how many but the size, if they weren't uniform, it was AWFUL and dried unevenly. On dry hair it looks less natural (on me) but makes for a nice style. I'll have to try this again. I will say that all the twisting on my wet hair was not nice when I did it too often.

oooooh, now I can't wait to try this...maybe with a center part...like the lace front weavy wonders....???? I really like that style....

This made me laugh sooooooooooo hard! Girl I've had a rough day and this had me howling! I appreciate you soooo much lolol.

I'm a relaxed head and I can do pretty decent bantus even though my hair is fine. The tighter you wind, the tighter the curl. They can be done on wet or dry hair. I prefer to do them on dry hair because it's less likely to get as tangled.:yep:

OMG - u r freakin heeeeelarious! I'm sorry but why u had to do the buckwheat thing for? On a serious note. I like the ponytail you did with it.

Bantu knot guru checking in. Seriously, though, you probably did too many knots without enough product. Whenever I do knots on my hair (wet or dry), I do about 9 at the most, sometimes 6. Anything into the double digits is too much, IF you are looking for that wavy, loose look.

The first pic is of bantus done on wet hair. I had somewhere to be that night so I actually took the knots down BEFORE they were dry. I didn't get a back view pic of this look, but you can kinda get the idea (i hope).

The second pic was another wet set, but I waited for my hair to dry completely before I took them out. That was 9 knots (3 x 3 grid on head).

The last pic was a set done on dry hair, fresh after a relaxer. I think I did 6 knots.

Also, IMO bantu sets look best when you add some product to it, like leave in conditioner or moisturizer, along with some oil to seal. :yep: Hope that helps. I just don't want you to give up on the bantus! It really is a great style. One of my favorites.
