Here's an example. It's supposed to stretch natural hair, but I loved the wave effect she got. It looks like a super loose braid out.

No, it won't work.
The point of banding for natural hair is to stretch it and give a uniform texture. Relaxed heads don't have texture to stretch or homogenize, so banding doesn't do anything but give you dents, much like what happens if you ponytail your hair when it's wet and let it dry.
You'd honestly be better off doing a regular braidout or knot out using bigger sections of hair.
