Am I the only one that uses Bag Balm? It's GOOD stuff! I have not seen any posts about it. I usually get laughs when people find out that I use it for my hair. So, I'm a country girl OKAY! Been using it for years.
It is a grease. An antiseptic ointment that is put on milking cows teats to make their hair grow. So they don't get Chapped during milking. Maybe it is an Oklahoma/Texas Thing. I was wondering if anyone had heard of it. I love the stuff!
Army, Bag Balm is a cream used on cow's udders to relieve from dryness, irritation and all sorts of skin problems. There's another product called Udder Cream that does the same thing. It's not just for cow's udders, it's also a great cream if you have severe dry skin, chapped hands, even hard, rough calloused feet. I've never heard of using it in hair. Kinda explain that to us would you, Fly? Toodles.
I use it for my scalp if it feels dry. My college roomate use to mix hers with something lighter (olive oil). I also put it on my ends every night. The ingredients are: Quinoline Sulfate in a petrolatum lanolin base.
I use Bag Balm a couple of times a month on my skin as a nightly treatment because I have dry skin. It makes my skin feel great the morning after.
My sister also uses it on my nieces skin. It has helped her eczema tremendously.
I never thought to use it on my hair or scalp. The consistency is thick and heavy. It seems as though it would weigh the hair down.
I would use Bag Balm for my skin & hair sometimes. I ran out and didn't buy more. I think it's only approved for animals even though people use it just as much.
Yes it will weigh your hair down if you don't mix it with something light. I use it straight though b/c my hair is very thick and heavy. Also it is the only thing that does not break my little girl out.
Bag Balm and the Udder cream are different products. I used to use Bag Balm in the green tin, but it was heavy. I've stopped using petroleum based products.
I buy mine at Walmart in the pet sec. I have never heard of the utter cream. It is about $5 a can. Has worked for me. I think it keeps my hair from breaking. My Grandma thinks it makes hers thicker and the other Grandma just uses it on her skin.
You can get Bag Balm and Udderly Smooth Udder Cream (great for after waxing) at Walgreens or Walmart. They're usually in the section with lotions and creams, like Nivea, Vaseline, etc. A lot of products like this are growing in popularity, and not just for animals anymore, which is why a lot of stores have moved them from the pet section. The ingredients aren't very different from stuff we already use on our hair and skin either. Here's pics and more info:
From the tin:
Ingredients:
8-Hydroxy Quinoline Sulfate 0.3% in a petrolatum, lanolin base.
Directions:
Massage thoroughly and allow ointment to remain for full softening effect.
Additional Information:
For chapped conditions and superficial abrasions. After each milking, apply thoroughly and allow coating to remain on surface. This protective ointment helps to keep superficial tissue moist and soft. In case of deep or puncture wounds seek medical help. Discontinue use if rash or irritation occurs. Keep this, and all medications, away from children.
Directions:
Wash udder and teat parts thorougly with clean water and soap before each milking to avoid contamination of milk. Use clean individual towels for this purpose. Apply to the udder after each milking, massaging into the skin. For teat cracks apply in sufficient quantity to fill crack and cover surrounding area. Apply uniformly to chafed area and bruises to maintain skin suppleness.
For aid in softening swollen udders following calving, apply liberally twice daily with gentle massage.
May be used for chapped or chafed skin. Do not use near eyes.
Ingredients:
Allantoin, Dimethicone, Lanolin Oil and Propylene Glycol in an Emollient Base
I have some of this. Works great on diaper rash, dry skin, etc. I was wondering about the smell - but will try mixing with some essential oil. I'll give it a try this monday after my spring hair cut.
I saw some of this in walgreens in the lotion dept. Made me think of this post and I bought it spur of the momment. Is anyone still using it and how do they like it?
Flyjump, you album is awsome! Please share your routine. (including with the bag balm-do you dampen you hair first then bun it for bed?) I love your rollerset pics. What did you use? What is honey conditioner? homemade or storebought? Inquiring minds want to know!

Spilling It!
Bag Balm- I use just like any hair oil or grease. You can mix it w/ EVOO to make it a little lighter if you like. I use it straight out of the can. Mainly putting it on my ends when they are dry (about 2x/week). And all over after I get a new relaxer b/c it is REALLY dry then. I don't put it on my damp hair (it is too heavy). I put it on when completely dry.
Honey conditioner- You may find a post on this one. I got the idea from the expert ladies here on the forum. And LOVE it! What I have been doing is mixing about 1 tablespoon of honey and 2-3 tablespoons of EVOO and a few sprinkles of cinnamon with my cholesterol conditioner. Put that on then a plastic bag for however long I have time for (15-?? minutes). Makes my hair really shinny. This last time I used some leftover Wild growth oil (instead of EVOO) that I just happen to run across under my sink. I really liked using that.
I am so glad you like my album. Thank you so much!
I was so amped when I saw this post, I can't even explain. I LOVE BAG BALM. I mix it with Palmer's Cocoa Butter and slather it all over my body each time I get out of the shower. Most of the day, I'm a big greasy mess, and my SO hates it, but he never stops talking about how soft my skin is, and how he always tells women they need to use it
. Anyway, I have never put it on my hair, but ok, I'm in. It feels so right, it can't be wrong
