Back to the Bun Challenge!!!

Poohbear

Fearfully Wonderfully Made
I finally found a way to wear a bun where it would not make me look like a little girl. :yep: At first, I would wear all of my hair combed back wit no part. Last night, I made a side part about an inch & a half away from the middle and part it back to my crown. Then I smoothed my hair down on both sides and formed my bun in the back. My hair is so thick, it feels good when caressing my hair into a bun. Now that my hair is longer and thicker, it looks better when I put it in a bun (my head doesn't look as big anymore compared to the bun  ). Anyway, I used my Pantene R&N Moisturizer and boar bristle brush to smooth my hair. I also used some curling mousse to combat the frizz. At night, I wore my satin scarf really tight to make my new growth lay down. This morning, my hair was very smooth and not frizzy at all. I then applied some of my glossing polish to give my hair more shine.
So now, I will moisturize daily and will wash my hair whenever, not always every 2 weeks. I might wash it anywhere from every 3-7 days. I will just change the position of my bun throughout the week. I'm glad I found something that works for me where I will not have to use the blowdryer to straighten my hair. I still look forward to using my Maxiglide when it comes in the mail, which I will probably use once a month whenever I want to wear my hair down. Just wanted to share with you ladies! Take care! :weird:

I'm glad you found a style you like. Other than that how is your transition going?

It's going along very well. My hair has never been so strong and thick! It's been 20 weeks now since I've had a relaxer (I was a week off I think when I said 20 weeks last week). I never thought about going natural until I joined this forum. I'm glad I finally made the decision to do this. It's a really neat experience. I just look forward to embracing my natural hair in the future! :yep:

Sounds good...I wear my hair in a bun or tucked away everyday. I will do this as long as I can..I am 14 weeks past relaxer and this style really works for me. I wear it all back or a side part and down & across the front across.

WGO, Surge Woogee, John Frieda's Smoothing creme and a silk scarf at night really keeps it looking healthy. I get it done at the dominican salon weekly and then put it up.

Yeah I forgot to mention I sprayed water on my new growth in order to comb it and smooth it. It's hard to comb natural hair when it's dry...that's a no-no. I also already had WGO in my hair before putting my hair in a bun. :)

Oh yeah I forgot to mention that I don't comb it from root to tip. I carefully use my fingers to mold or light comb the ends in the direction I want. This has really cut down on the shedding for me.

I know wearing a bun can be boring but in the end your hair will thank you for this low maintenance style. I work in accounting in a professional environment and they consider a bun or a french twist more professional than wearing your hair out! Good luck! HTH

;) Yeah, I don't comb from root to tip either. I just comb the roots mainly to detangle and smooth them out so my hair will lay down. I can't just use my fingers/hands to smooth because I have different lengths of hair in the front. I get a few shedding but shedding doesn't bother me...only breakage. :yep: Next time I do a bun, I will do it in the shower so I don't have to worry about combing/brushing as much. I'll just wash and condition my hair, apply products in the shower and then put my hair in a bun.

Interesting you say this. I'm at work right now (I work for a regional accounting firm). I read a professional book that said professional environments rather women to wear their hair up or an above shoulder length cut. I rather wear a bun than get a hair cut. I feel better wearing my bun like this than the way I used to wear it.
I still like wearing my hair down but during this season, my hair tends to get dry quicker and I keep thinking my hair is not being protected. In the past, I never suffered breakage from wearing my hair out, but I want to retain length in the process of growing my hair out now. I'll just have to make sure I have fun with wearing the bun so I don't get bored with it. ;)

That sounds good, maybe I'll try...do you tie it down afterward with a silk scarf or something.

I will tie down my hair really tight with either a satin or silk scarf. :antlers:

Poohbear, please post a pic of your bun, you know, for a visual aid. Please?!
Check out my profile. There's a small pic in the top left hand corner of my profile. ;)

And WHY didn't I just stick to this bun challenge like I said?!?! :dizzy:

I wear a bun mostly to bed with my satin scarf smoothing down my edges & nape. I moisturize first & then bun up! I would part my hair in the middle mainly to give it some type of "style/design" & then apply my pony! My ends do stay moist & I keep away from the constant heat of flat irons & blow dryers so it's helping to accomplish a few good things!
