Hi ladies,

A question just came to my head, does anyone use baby shampoo? I always read about how harsh and drying shampoo can be to the hair, but what about baby shampoo. Is it any different?

Thanks sweetcoco ;)

In chemists/supermarkets, i really don't think there is a difference. I was checking the other day and the all contained some form of SLS. I think online you can find SLS free/organic baby shampoos.

I use baby shampoo to wash my makeup brushes, it's very gentle. I have never used it to wash my own hair tho. Maybe Honeydew will chime in, I seem to remember her saying she had used baby poo as a mild clarifier.

Baby shampoo is designed to remove cradle cap so sometimes it can be very harsh on hair. If you're looking to remove build-up it should be good for that but it's not moisturizing at all. I've used it in the past and it was so drying for me. My hair felt stripped so never again.

ITA. from what i've read it can be more harsh than regular shampoo.

You're right — it is too harsh for hair. The reason it doesn't cause tears is not because it's any gentler than grown-up shampoo, it doesn't cause tears because it's the same pH as our eyes, around 7.0. The optimum pH level for hair is 4.5 – 5.5. Baby shampoo opens the hair cuticles, which causes tangles, moisture loss and dull, rough-feeling hair.

Baby shampoo is great for stripping hair of unwanted color after a bad dye job or for removing stage makeup, but I wouldn't use it on my hair.

I don't use it alone because it does not seem to clean cones well. But I do use the detangling one to rinse out my henna/cassia out with. It is cheaper to do those multiple rinses with that than to use my regular shampoo.
