I have a question about one of the most "raved" supplements in Long Hair Care Land, BIOTIN!
Now of course we all know that this vit is excellent for hair growth and it's even ideal for nail growth. What I want to know is how many of you ladies can say it has helped your SKIN?

Afterall the bottle does (usually) read: Biotin: hair, SKIN, and NAILS formula, doesn't it? (lol)

I took biotin and it loved up my hair and nails whilst treating my skin like a red headed step child :nono: Cystic acne. Weird bumps in places I have never got before... :perplexed

Still too scared to try it again.

Yep. that's about the long and short of it...
Biotin's beautiful for the hair... but boy did I get lumps on my forehead.
Big ol dutty cystic acne...

I didn't really experience teenage acne, so to get adult acne for months taking biotin?
:nono:

Gurl I know what ya mean.
Like I never understood why it's called a "hair, skin and nails" formula...when it has such adverse effects on the skin 70% of the time? :nono:

I use to take Purtian Pride's Biotin and my hair and nails flourished. It didn't help or hurt my skin (never broke out from take the supplements) but I had constant headaches.

I guess I should have mentioned, I try and get my biotin through foods instead of supplements.

Foods Containing Biotin

There are a variety of foods rich in biotin. The richest source is nuts (peanuts, filberts, almonds, peanut butter). A half cup of peanuts yields more than double the daily requirement of biotin for adults. Smaller amounts of biotin (anywhere from 3 to 8.5 micrograms per serving) are found in tuna, pork, banana, papaya, carrots, avocado, tomato sauce, nonfat milk, salmon, swiss chard, sweet potato, haddock, lowfat yogurt, cashews, cooked egg and soy protein isolate.

I have not noticed any adverse effects on my skin by doing so

I took biotin for 2 months. My hair grew everywhere (sideburns and a mustache), my nails were out of control and I had really bad cystic acne. I've stopped taking it, but I am still trying to get rid of the acne marks on my face. Biotin is not for me.

I've heard that inorder to see the benefits of biotin with ur skin u have to take it for a while...

I'm just too scared and cannot tolerate the acne to get to that point

I thought it was just me.
I had to shave my legs every day when I was on it

Thanks for posting this Sensi.
I wonder how much of a difference would consuming biotin (in the form of food) would make rather than taking it in the form of a supplement......hmm.... :scratchch:

Did you miss my."Biotin and your Beard" thread? Yeah, it does something to your skin...breaks it out:perplexed I think taking biotin when it's mixed with other vitamins in pill form lessen the chance of you having breakouts:yep:

I took a nutrition course where my teacher (whom is a registered dietitian) said that getting your vitamins through foods is aways preferable to taking a supplement. The supplement is more so to fill in the gaps of your diet, not replace organic nutrients. Nothing is more potent and powerful then organic vitamins and minerals found in food. It also absorbs better that way, which might explain why I do not break out like I do on the supplement. :yep:
HTH

It did nothing for me! Started off taking a small dose and then started taking 5,000mcg and still nada. I think some neck hair sprouted but that was it.

Above it lists those foods range from 3-8.5mgs of sulphur. I was taking 5000mg in one small pill:yep: per day.

I took Biotin 5000mcg once a day and it helped the skin on my face. It prevented acne blemishes and bumps for me. It did nothing for my hair and nails.

Ugh, biotin. Oh, I've tried everything to get biotin to quit attacking my skin. I was drinking water til I'm about to drown but, bottom line for me, biotion in a no no for my skin. I'm also still trying to get rid of the acne scars and never had acne during my teen years so, this sucks.

Wow, seems like you can't "have your cake and eat it" with this vit.
Either you're getting hair growth and busted skin....or vice versa like Poohbear did ^^^^^
lol...smh @ Biotin.

Njoy, what are you doing to get rid of your acne scars?
I have some on my nose that I just want GONE. :nono:

I don't have problem skin so the benefits I see are in my hair and nails. If it's making you break out or sprout hairs in places where you don't want it, this is because you probably don't have a biotin deficiency so you don't need the supplement.

I never had acne but biotin ruined that but made my hair grow like crazy from a bc. Make sure to drink alot of water...im thinking about msm but kinda scared because a friend of mine said it affected her dreams anyone know of this

For those of you who got acne, did you take B-complex with it? When I started out I got acne, but when I read on here to take B-complex, I don't have that problem anymore.

My hair and nails grow from it, but I also think other factors contribute to the growth. I've never had issues with my skin other than when I took biotin without the b-complex and ended up with a pimple a day, so I don't see where the biotin is helping or hurting.

I took biotin along with a b complex vitamin. It made my hair and nails grow, but I echo everyone else when I say it did a number on my skin. I take a multivitamin now...it's better for the body imo.

I heard alot of horror stories about biotin causing breakouts. With adequate water intake biotin cleared up my skin and gave it a glow. I get so many compliments on my skin. I have an issue with swallowing pills so I put it in my water and i cant taste it at all. Biotin is also water soluble so very low toxcity risk.

Biotin broke me out, I'm using the shampoo and conditioner!

I used Biotin for about 2 and a half to three months straight. Didn't get get acne but I got sideburns and ingrown hairs all over my chin. I just stopped recently taking it and my ingrown hairs are nearly nonexistent now.

Good stuff!

meeee. I've been going without make-up for a few weeks now ! and anyone who know me personally KNOWS that I don't step out with at least some cover-up on ...:blush: the skin is damn near flawless now ... damn near lol

Hello D.Lisa I know you asked Njoy, but I used to have acne too what I used was a comfrey and goldenseal mask. Now, if you have sensitive skin goldenseal may sting a little the first time you apply it. Here is the mask it was added to my blog yesterday.

You can also dab a little of Benzoyl peroxide on the infected area, this ingredient helps in mild cases. Hope this helps. :)

That is strange because I have cystic acne off and on ever since high school and biotin did not break me out at all. If anything it is helping my skin but who knows if that is what is helping b/c I'm also taking a multi-vitamin and other supplements. I'm also taking a skin hair nail formula so maybe that is counteracting what the biotin could do to cause acne?
