Hey, everyone. I have recently changed my regimen to bunning 100% of the time, co-washing 2 times a week and only airdrying:yep:. I only detangle on wash days when my hair is laden with conditioner. BUT I have tangles all the time especially when I am M&S. I just wanna ask all you knowledgeable ladies in here, is this normal? I just feel my hair doesn't look healthy. :nono:. Thanks in advance...

BostonMaria I've always had lots of shedding and breakage IMO. I also had spilts that I've dusted off. That's why I started low manipulation regimen. I used to do a braid regimen, but that was'nt working so well...I dont't know if it is causing more split ends. I started 2 weeks ago. Thanks...

Are tangles normal. Yes

If you think your tangles are excessive, well then no that's not normal. How sure are u that your moisture and protein are balanced? Could it be an adverse reaction to the relaxer?

Incorporating certain oils( for me ceramides) into my regimen helped. So maybe oil rinses could work, pre-pooing, sealing, wet sealing( when hair is wet or damp) , hot oil treatments, steaming with oil. I'm sure there more examples. But all oils and uses are not created equally.

I bun a lot and I was having that same problem, tangles, matts..and it would happen so quickly.

Last week, I prepooed overnight with coconut oil, detangled thoroughly, then washed in braids.

After I was done, I took each braid down, put on some conditioner, braided it back up and let it dry. Good tangle free hair

And each night, I take down the bun, pull out the shed hair, moisturize if needed, and put it in 3-4 braids for the night. It worked really well and I'm pleased with my hair and how it kept the tangles to a minimum. So we'll see if it works again this week.

Hope that helps. I was really at the end of my rope, but I jsut had to go back to basics and it paid off

That would spell trouble for my hair. I am also relaxed, and I tried something similar early on in my hair journey. The end result was matting, knots, and breakage. What has worked for me is prepooing with coconut oil, air dried roller sets (to stretch new growth), oil rinses with jojoba oil, and using argan oil.

Are you bunning on wet or very damp hair? If so, that may be causing your splits and breakage. Bunning on wet hair gave me many, many tangles and breakage. Try air dying to 80% dry before bunning, and what works for me is to do this overnight into a pony tail and roll the pony in a roller to smooth the ends to stop them from tangling.

Also, what helped me is rinsing a prepoo out with borax. Using a prepoo consisting of aloe vera juice, argan oil, and coconut oil and rinsing it out with borax and then DCing helped to end my horrific matting.

I think a certain amount of tangles are normal and expected especially if your hair is 4b (relaxed or natural). But there are ways to cut it down.

Your issues are why frequent co-washing and bunning never seemed to work for me. I was reluctant to return to wet bunning but with a trip coming up and my hair still recovering from post-partum shedding, I thought I might give it another go. So far, so good. What's changed in my regimen is incorporating Vaseline as my sealer and my hair and ends are looking great.

I'm glad abcd09 mentioned aloe juice. That's another thing I use as a leave-in that has helped me dramatically reduce tangles and knots.

Thank you all ladies. So I get that I should try prepooing, oil rinsing, braiding at night and rollersetting. I have also learned that tangles can lead to breakage and split ends even if I'm not combing my hair, right?
abcd09, yeah I bun on damp hair, will take your advice. And I also remember aloe vera juice being very good for my tangles when I used it.:yep: I think I will try out this regimen and your advice for 2 more weeks and see how that goes...will try and keep you posted...(anymore suggestions will be deeply appreciated)

i take my bun down at night, remove shed hairs with fingers, moisturize, seal, bun back up. i would suggest daily finger combing.

Totally agree with shortdub78 about daily finger combing. It is crucial for me to get shed hairs out on a daily basis to prevent ugly mats. I use some sort of lubrication on my dry hair--usually moisturize and seal first.
