I think they're a great way to grow out your hair, but some think braids aren't for everyone, even thought I tend to disagree. The thing about them is that your ends are still exposed to air, so when you have your braids in, make sure you put some braid spray or leave-in conditioner on them (focusing on the part where you hair is) to keep your hair conditioned. I find that synthetic hair dries my hair out, plus my hair frizzes up very easily using synthetic hair for braiding. Tie your braids up at night with a satin/silk scarf and if not, use a satin/silk pillowcase. It will make a huge difference with helping your style last and your hair frizzing up in the braids. Hope this helps.
Box braids are a great way to grow out hair and promote growth. Truthfully, it's not really promoting growth. Your hair grows every day, but daily styling and maintenance can prevent you from seeing results. Braids help to retain growth, which is why when you remove them after 2 or 3 months it looks like your hair has grown a lot. That's the growth you would have gotten anyway, but for daily styling, maintenance and breakage. The key with braids is keeping your growth, which means moisturizing daily, making sure you focus on the areas where your hair sits under the braids, and taking your dear sweet time removing them. You must completely detangle your hair during the take-down and before washing, or you'll end up with matted locked hair that you'll have no choice but to cut. I also recommend washing your braids every few weeks (conditioning might cause the braids to slip out - maybe someone else with good experience with this can weigh in). Good luck!!
I love having box braids. It doesn't really promote growth. But since you're not styling it or doing anything to cause breakage you do see alot of growth. But remember to moisturize that's very important and also wash with shampoo atleast 1x a week I went 2 months and washed my scalp 1x when i had braids in. Let's just say that wasn't a good idea
