I’m not crazy about the shampoos. The ingredients in the ones I’ve inquired about have been fairly harsh. I like the conditioners because the better ones—Tropical and Skala for example—are very softening and moisturizing w/o being greasy. Even some of the oilier ones—i.e. Nacidit, Miss Key— rinse cleaner than a lot of conditioners made especially for black hair. Even after I stopped relaxing my hair a lot of the black hair products were still too heavy and greasy. The first three ingredients in Henna Queen Carrot Conditioner are water, lanolin, mineral oil and petrolatum. But after rinsing, my hair was soft and fluffy—no greasy or coated feeling at all.

I think they are good and bad dominican products just like anything else. The funny thing is that I did a research internship with these two dominicans straight from DR and they both told me that they and everyone they knew uses Redken products b/c it protected their hair the best. So go figure.:)

Re: Are Dominican & Brazilian Products Superior To

I just tried the Miss Key 10 in 1 for the first time this weekend (thanks again Tracy!!

)and I was very pleased with it. I put it on and used my heat cap for 30 mins. It didn't give me a lot of slip but it made my hair feel strong; I used my LUST afterwards and my hair came out VERY soft.

Yes BB,

I love the 10 in 1. But I've always wondered how Dominican products stack up against American products in general.

Re: Are Dominican & Brazilian Products Superior To

I'm especially glad to see you got good results, Lindy. I've been in Boston all weekend, and I just bought 10 en 1 from a Latino beauty supply yesterday. I'm using it on Tuesday, and now I really can't wait!

Re: Are Dominican & Brazilian Products Superior To

Just my little old opinion but here's the thing with most Dominican products...

Because there are varying textures and types of hair that closely mirror the varying types and textures of AA hair, and because Dominican women use a lot of heat in their weekly/daily maintenance regimes, they have had to find ways to keep thier hair healthy (and long! muy importante!) while using more heat than is necessarily good for the hair. So conditioning is very important - it's a SCIENCE in DR. And what they use works for us because for every Dom. you find with a given texture, you can find an AA woman with that identical texture - many of us even.

In addition, because DR is on an island, they, like many island natives, tend to prefer NATURAL products as additions to their regular maintenance regimes because they are readily available - avocados, milk, honey, cinnamon - all things they can find in their kitchen cabinets. Natural products have great benefits as far as hair care so to this extent I think their products can be a little more potent.

They result of these sort of - traditions? - are ready made products that contain ingredients which can, indeed, be wonderful for the maintenance of the hair. Long healthy hair that moves is the goal for Dom. women - and Dom. product formulations reflect that.

What's interesting is that the base of most Dominican conditioners is a forumlation that is basically identical to what we know as cholestrol.....a heavy conditioner that is known for its softening capabilities - with natural ingredients added to target health, shine, growth etc.....

The American hair care product industry tends to focus more on STYLE as it's primary goal - even to the exclusion of health sometimes - and I think the product formulations reflect that - in both AA specific products and otherwise.

Re: Are Dominican & Brazilian Products Superio

Wow Tracy,

Good info. I can say that 10 in 1 makes my hair soft and shiny even with air drying. It looks like it's been tapped with a little flat iron or curling iron

I recently tried Salerm Wheat Germ Oil Deep Conditioner and Salerm 21 Silk Protein Leave-in and am very happy with both products. On the two occaisions I used them, my hair felt soft, detangled and ultra- moisturized especially considering it is near time for my touch-up. Since using these products my hair feels more moisturized and has more shine than it would usually. In my opinion, these products get

Salerm is made in Spain, but is used in many Dominican salons (I learned this from various threads on this board).

I am also considering trying other Dominican products, since I've had such a good experience with Salerm.

I agree with this!

Re: Are Dominican & Brazilian Products Superior To

Exactly. Dominican products work wonders for my hair. I don't know where I'd be without them. I tried Salerm 21 for the first time today, and I am in love.

Re: Are Dominican & Brazilian Products Superior To

I used Nacidit Avocado shampoo in the past. It has no SLS and was very gentle...took a while to get a lather...very nice...

Re: Are Dominican & Brazilian Products Superior To

I used a coconut shampoo and the matching conditioner that I got from a local store (Botanica Boricua in Arlington, VA). The brand is Dominican, Rysell. It smells wonderful, the shampoo is gentle (sodium myreth sulfate), and the conditioner detangles and softens well. I think I'm going to put it in permanent rotation. I just wish I could find it at the drugstore.

Re: Are Dominican & Brazilian Products Superior To

For those of u that have used the Silk Protien leave in bt Salerm, does it make your hair hard or silky and soft. I recently purchased the Biomarine Leave its aqua colored in a bottle and I didnt like it at all. It has protein in it and think thats why it left my roller set kinda hard. My hair was not soft at all after it dried. I also see that Salerm makes a creamy leave in I wonder if that makes your hair soft? Any advice ?

Re: Are Dominican & Brazilian Products Superior To

I've used Salerm 21 leave-in after washing my hair with Salerm Wheat Germ deep conditioner and my hair cam out soft and silky. Once I used it with a roller set and the other time I just wrapped my wet hair and let it dry under the drier. My hair was soft, and silky. The leave in also helped detangle my hair.
