I'm not talking as big or elaborate like Erica Badu but more reserved ones. I have a friend who had one and it was low and wrapped to the back like a scarf. She says she goes to walmart and buys like a yard of fabric. Does anyone have a link with instructions because I would like to try? Thanks Q

I think head wraps are so sophisticated! I've seen pictures of Alicia keys sporting some, and she looked so pretty!

Gee, before 911 I used to wrap my hair all the time especially in the winter when I lived up north. I was a stylish way to keep warmer. A friend in college taught me two basic ways of wrapping and I took off from there. Wraps really do look nice and I always recieved compliments. It's just that the area I lived in up north and even down here in the desert the WP don't know the difference between African head wraps and MiddleEastern and with all the Islamic flack and shootings here I thought it far safer to put away all my material.
I used to search Walmart's $1.00 table in their fabric section to buy 1, 1 1/2, and 2 yrds of fabric. Muslin fabric works best to achieve the look that the Keys girl wears bc it kinda streatches to mold to your head and the knot is tied in the back. Its also a great cool summer fabric. Cotton fabrics work best for the turban styles. Avoid silky or synthetics bc they take 20 mins or more to get in place bc they are so slippery. I still had to use hair pins to keep these fabrics from slipping off. The turban styles are pretty from the web site posted by Boudaliscious. You can tie those in the front or even in the back for a different look. Or, add a broch and dress it up.

Thanks for the tips. I just want to have something simple going to the back with a knot. So how do you prepare your hair up under the wrap? Should I pull it back in a ponytail, slick it back, or put in a puff? Q

I loves wearing scarves, never really done it in the turban style though. When I do it, it's normally right before I am going to get my hair done. So, I usually wear a pre-poo or a mild protein treatment, then cover my hair securely in plastic wrap. Sometimes, I am even deep conditioning underthere!

I started wearing them when I was in College. Be careful around the hairline, it can thin it out. I used to go to the African speciality shop in my City and buy myself 1.5 yards of stiff material. I would get my hair in the front and put gel on it (the edges) and brush back. Put my wrap on exposing the slicked hair. Always got compliments on my wraps, people have even stopped me to ask me how to tie them up  I can tie them in my sleep. An African woman showed me two different ways without clips and they were neat and tight. I don't wear them anymore, I got burnt out on them. But, I will again one day in the future. Good luck and have fun with them.
