Anyone not trim or cut hair?

I was at church on Sunday and I noticed that all of the white ladies had really long hair; however, the black ladies had short hair or it was kind of broken off in places. Some even wear wigs and don't even have a hair line. I mean completely bald on the sides or just 1 inch of hair. Or just totally see thru ends and really thin hair. That is really sad b/c your hair is your crown of glory. I'm just blessed enough to have super thick hair that is very resiliant. However, there are a few black ladies that have shoulder length hair and it isn't broken off. I attend a pentecostal church and I've been going there for 3 years now. I haven't had my hair trimmed since then and it is only shoulderlength in the back and the next layer is necklength. I want to grow out, but I don't know if that will be possible with a press and curl and heat styling. I know Cathy House has been able to achieve really long hair without any trims in 7 or 10 years, but I was just wandering if anyone else has done this. My hair is really thick, but it just seems like my hair should longer than what it is right now. Aaaagh, it was just something that had been on my mind for a while. If anyone has any suggestions on how to achieve length without trimming split ends please let me know. I would like for all of my hair to be shoulder length by next year, but it seems like it may take another 2 years. Thanks for any responses.

Its my understanding that Cathy Howse does not trim her hair only because she is trying to make a point: that trimming hair does not stimulate hair growth.

She does recommend trimming if your hair needs it, i.e., breaking off in bits, dry and brittle. I was trying to do the "no trim" thing for a while and my ends just started crumbling 1/2 inch bits and pieces. I realized I am not trying to prove a point or sell a book. My hair needs this. My last trim was 1/4 inch (I actually used a measuring tape before I cut). Ima try and trim every 2-3 months.

i trim all the time even though I dont need to. I just like even ends. But now Im trying to cut down. Today was my last trim....no more until next november hopefully. Actually before I started over with my hair I was at bra strap length about two years ago, and i wasnt moisturizing, blow drying everyweek and washing every two weeks, and trimming every month. Now I dont do any of that so i can only imagine how lng my hair will get if i continue my regimen.

i havent trimmed my hair in months, and i dont need to..i dont think u need to trim your hair unless it is damaged or uneven and you want it even....

I only have my hair trimmed about once a year at the beauty salon. The rest of the time I trim individual hairs that have knots in them, which I get because my hair is natural. I don't get split ends, and I do use a lot of heat on my hair. My hair is about 3 inches past my bra strap when I blow dry it.

I grew up with a lot of black girls that had short hair, and I always had long hair- the longest was to my waist, in college. I really do think that the reason their hair didn't appear to grow was because they would trim it all the time. I had one friend who had really beautiful natural hair that she would have pressed at the beauty salon every two weeks. She would get it trimmed every time she went. It was very healthy, but it would never get longer.

I think it's better to grow your hair to the length you want it, and then get it trimmed even. Most of us wear our hair up in protective styles anyway.

That's exactly the point she's trying to make.

I don't trim and find that my hair grows fine with little breakage. I've learned that a "trim" to stylists means "cut it how you like." I've come out of there with all sorts of cuts. However I do dust which means cutting off dry dead looking ends when my (own) hair is twisted/braided.

Well, I posted about this a while back. I haven't had a trim since about June. The very ends of my hair have a bit of colour left on them from my what I call my "moment of insanity" where I cut off all my below shoulder length hair shaved up the back and dyed about 3 differnt shades (include bleached)

Well that was summer of 2001 and now here I am in 2003 almost 2004 and that colour is hovering around the ends. I'm going to trim it off because it's dry and not healthy. After that though I doubt I'll be needing anymore trims for a long while (at least not till summer) due to the protective bun that I wear, and mega moisturizing.

I need a trim BADLY and to me even though people might not think that trimming grows hair to me it does! I dont know why, maybe it doesnt but the growing is more uniform so the growth is more noticeable

I think that that may be the reason because I just can't see how trimming the ends can affect the roots or scalp and increase growth rate. I trim to even my ends nothing else.

I get a 1/4 inch(maybe twice as much on the sides ) trimmed every time I relax which is evry 6-8 weeks.I think the stylist trims just to even me up.I definitely don't mind it.

I haven't had a trim or a cut in over a year. My hair looks fine. Cathy did say that she has a trusted friend cut her hair when it looks real rough. But she doesn't keep a trimming schedule. I won't keep on, I'll only cut when I want to, not when someone deems I need to.

I just realize that some people like to cut their hair...a lot. I'm one of those people who don't.

My last trim at a salon was in April. I trimmed my own hair prior to my research on the web. Just wanted to see if my ends looked ragged even after the trim. They did. Why? Because my hair was dry. I even did an uneven trim. I cut more off the left than the right. Did I even it up? No. Do I care that it's uneven? Slightly. Am I going to even it up? Probably not. I notice and I'm the only one that matters and I don't mind that it's uneven. One side of my hair always grew at a different rate than others and it just isn't that big of an issue with me. Sometimes I notice split ends and I promise you that I don't take the scissors and cut everywhere. I literally will simply cut off that split on that one strand. And that's it. Call me compulsive, but I just don't think that all my hair needs trimming at the same time.

And since I haven't found a salon yet that I trust my hair to, I won't be getting any salon trims for quite some time and even if and/or when I get my next relaxer which won't be for another 10 weeks (26 weeks=1/2 year), I won't be getting it trimmed then unless I see the need for it. No one except me knows how I want my hair and if I want to wear my ragged ends, that's me.

I have not had a trim since I started my serious hair care regime last November. I take care of my ends religiously and have never had a problem with breakage or see thru ends. I don't think I'll ever have my hair trimmed again. My hair was just above my ears when I started and now its shoulder length.

I work in an office with half black women and half white women and notice that there are some with healthy ends & edges that are black and some that have short hair with lots of breakage. I've also noticed that there are some white women with a lot of split ends and uneven haircolor. I think anyone with split ends or dry damage ends should trim them b/c they're going to fall off any way. And I have noticed that trimmed ends are more becoming. I hate when people grow their hair out and it's all thin at the ends.

See -- I do have see through ends and I hate it so much, but trimming scares me. My hair is finally creeping down to my shoulders. I planned to get a trim this past Sunday when I got my touch-up. I even told my stylist, then at the last moment I changed my mind, it didn't help that it would have added $15 to my bill. I told her next month I'll definitely get a trim as my last one was in June.

Darn it, I can't find where I read that anymore. I know she doesn't believe in trimming just for trimming. But I know I read that, I'm not crazy.

Me too! She said that there is no way that she ever trims but will have a trusted friend "even it out". You are not crazy, Skegeesmb!

Tigerorange, it was not 7-10 yrs she did'nt trim, just when she was researching which was about 1 - 2 yrs tops. Maybe a yr.

And trimming has nothing to do with growth. So when you say you feel you should have more hair now, I'm not sure what you mean, I think I do but there's things to consider like are you experiencing breakage? Have you reached your max? What's your hair growth rate? ie 1/4" 1/2" 1", less?

Sorry for all the questions but all these factors are important in understanding your lenghth.

AND I probably should have read the responses before typing but I did'nt so if somethings repeated, sorry...

BTW I try to trim quarterly or twice a yr.

I have had some setbacks recently that cause me to have to CUT a few inches of hair off. But normally, I only trim like twice a year.

i agree with asummertyme. ever since reading the hair lady's experience on her website, i decided not to trim. it's been since last year some time and is working. my ends need a snip, but not even a quarter of an inch is necessary. i'm proud that i have taken care of them and when getting a doobie last week, was surprised to find my length was at the end of brastrap! i think like the hair lady, i'll snip when it starts arriving at the length i want.

I tried that, but when I went to my beautician she trimmed my hair an that's all she's not 1 of those scissor happy ones and she doesn't charge me for it.
